Plain-language answers about personal aromatherapy, olfaction, terpenes, botanicals, +CBD blends, formulation, and the MONQ mouth-to-nose method.
Clear answers, in plain language
Each entry starts with a direct definition and adds MONQ context where useful. Search by term, ingredient, blend, mechanism, or safety concept.
Important use note
MONQ blends should not be inhaled into the lungs. Draw gently through the mouth, hold briefly, and exhale through the nose.
+CBD
The suffix used for a MONQ blend formulated with CBD isolate. +CBD products contain 0.0% THC and are non-intoxicating.
0.0% THC
The stated THC content of MONQ +CBD products. It distinguishes MONQ’s CBD-isolate formulas from products containing measurable THC.
1,8-cineole (eucalyptol)
A naturally occurring aromatic compound found prominently in eucalyptus and also in herbs such as rosemary. It has a fresh, camphoraceous scent.
Adults only
MONQ diffusers are intended for adults age 18 and older, or the applicable legal age where the product is purchased or used.
Affect
The basic felt quality of experience, often described along dimensions such as pleasant–unpleasant and activated–settled. Affect is related to, but not identical with, a named emotion.
AirTip™
A soft silicone accessory that fits over the crystal end of a MONQ Original diffuser. A gentle squeeze releases a small puff of aroma nearby for ambient, nose-breathing use.
Allostasis
The process of maintaining stability by adjusting to anticipated or changing demands. Unlike homeostasis, allostasis emphasizes flexible regulation rather than a single fixed set point.
Alpha-pinene
A pine-scented terpene present in many conifers, rosemary, and frankincense. It contributes crisp, forest-like aromatic notes.
Amygdala
A brain structure involved in emotional processing and salience. It is part of the broader limbic network connected with olfactory processing.
Aroma
The scent perceived when volatile molecules reach receptors in the nose. An aroma may contain many individual aromatic compounds.
Aromatherapy
The intentional use of plant-derived aromas as part of a sensory or wellness practice. Aromatherapy is complementary wellness, not a substitute for medical care.
Aromatherapy Anywhere®
A MONQ brand phrase expressing the idea of a portable, personal aromatherapy experience that can travel with you.
Aromatic compound
A volatile molecule that can produce a perceived scent when it reaches and activates olfactory receptors.
Aromatic mist
The small amount of airborne formulation released when a MONQ diffuser gently warms its blend. It is intended for the mouth-to-nose method, not lung inhalation.
Aromatic use only
Use focused on experiencing aroma through the directed mouth-to-nose method. MONQ products are not foods, medicines, or lung-delivery products.
Arousal (physiology)
A general level of nervous-system activation, ranging from low-alertness states to highly activated states. Arousal does not by itself indicate whether an experience is pleasant or unpleasant.
Attention
The selective allocation of mental resources to particular information, sensations, or tasks. Aroma can serve as a cue that marks a transition into an intended activity.
Autonomic nervous system
The body system that regulates largely automatic functions. Slow, deliberate breathing can influence autonomic activity independently of any aroma.
Bergamot
A citrus fruit whose peel oil smells bright, floral, and lightly bitter. It is one of the three primary botanicals in Sleepy.
Beta-caryophyllene
A spicy, woody terpene found in black pepper, copaiba, and several other botanicals. It is also classified as a dietary cannabinoid because it can interact with CB2 receptors.
Black pepper
A familiar spice whose essential oil has a dry, warm, peppery aroma and contains beta-caryophyllene. It appears as a supporting botanical in several MONQ formulas.
Blend
A deliberately formulated combination of essential oils and supporting ingredients. MONQ blends are built around a named aromatic intention rather than a single note.
Botanical
A plant or plant-derived material. In MONQ language, botanicals are the source materials from which aromatic essential oils and extracts are obtained.
Breath awareness
Deliberately noticing the pace, depth, and route of breathing without needing to force a particular result. The MONQ method uses breath awareness to keep the experience gentle and mouth-to-nose.
Breath-activated
Activated by a gentle draw through the mouthpiece. A MONQ diffuser uses that airflow to release a light aromatic mist; it has no on/off button.
Cacao
The plant source of cocoa. Its aromatic material contributes a rich, softly roasted, chocolate-like note to Love.
Cannabidiol (CBD)
A non-intoxicating cannabinoid found in hemp. Select MONQ products use American-grown CBD isolate and are labeled +CBD.
Cannabinoid
A class of compounds that can interact with the body’s endocannabinoid system. CBD is a cannabinoid; terpenes are a different class of plant compounds.
Caraway
An aromatic seed with warm, spicy, slightly sweet notes. It is used as a supporting botanical in selected MONQ blends.
Carrier
A base ingredient that holds and helps disperse other ingredients. Organic vegetable glycerin serves as the carrier in MONQ diffuser formulations.
CBD isolate
A highly purified form of cannabidiol separated from other hemp constituents. MONQ +CBD products use isolate formulated to contain 0.0% THC.
Chamomile
A daisy-family botanical known for a soft, apple-like, herbaceous aroma. It is a primary botanical in Sleepy and Relieve.
Chemosensation
The detection of chemical molecules by sensory systems. Smell and taste are the best-known forms, while the trigeminal system also detects qualities such as cooling or tingling.
Cinnamon leaf
Essential oil distilled from cinnamon leaves, with a warm, spicy profile that differs from cinnamon-bark oil. It is a primary botanical in Sexy.
Clary sage
An aromatic herb with an earthy, green, slightly floral scent. It is used as a supporting oil in several MONQ blends.
Classical conditioning
A form of learning in which repeated pairing gives a previously neutral cue the ability to evoke an associated response. It helps explain how a familiar scent can become linked with a routine.
CO₂ extraction
An extraction method that uses pressurized carbon dioxide to separate selected plant compounds, leaving no conventional solvent residue when the process is complete.
Coffee
The roasted seed of the coffee plant, used aromatically for its dark, familiar, roasted profile. It is a primary botanical in Focus.
Cold pressing
A mechanical extraction method often used for citrus peels. It releases aromatic oil without relying on high heat.
Combustion
Burning. MONQ diffusers use controlled, gentle heat and do not burn tobacco or plant material.
Conditioned cue
A sensory signal that becomes associated with a repeated context or routine. A familiar aroma may become a cue for the ritual in which it is consistently used.
Conditioned response
A learned response that occurs after a previously neutral cue has been repeatedly paired with a particular event, context, or state.
Copaiba
An aromatic oleoresin tapped from South American Copaifera trees. Its scent is mild, woody, and resinous, and it is a primary botanical in Relieve.
Cozy+CBD
A warm MONQ +CBD blend led by cardamom, cinnamon, and vanilla, designed for a comforting aromatic ritual.
Endocannabinoid system
A signaling network involving cannabinoid receptors, naturally produced endocannabinoids, and related enzymes. It helps regulate many normal biological processes.
Entourage effect
The hypothesis that compounds in a botanical mixture may interact to create an experience different from any single compound alone. It should not be read as proof of a specific clinical effect.
Essential oil
A concentrated mixture of volatile aromatic compounds obtained from botanical material, commonly through steam distillation or citrus-peel expression.
Eucalyptus
A broad group of aromatic trees whose oils are typically fresh and camphoraceous. Eucalyptus is a primary botanical in Ocean.
Exteroception
The sensing and interpretation of information originating outside the body, including sights, sounds, smells, tastes, touch, and temperature.
Extraction
The process used to separate aromatic compounds from plant material. Common methods include steam distillation, cold pressing, and CO₂ extraction.
FDA disclaimer
Required statement for product-related wellness claims: “These statements have not been evaluated by the Food and Drug Administration. This product is not intended to diagnose, treat, cure, or prevent any disease.”

Fennel
An aromatic herb and seed with a sweet, anise-like profile. It is a primary botanical in Happy.
Fight-or-flight response
A common name for coordinated physiological changes associated with perceived challenge or threat, often involving sympathetic nervous-system activity. It is one part of a broader range of stress responses.
Fir
A conifer whose needle and twig oils smell crisp, green, and forest-like. Fir is a primary botanical in Forest.
Flow state
A state of deep task engagement in which attention feels absorbed and action feels fluid. MONQ uses “flow” as an intention for a work or creative ritual, not as a guaranteed effect.
Focus
A MONQ Original blend led by coffee, ginger, and rosemary, created for clear, intentional work or creative routines.
Focus+CBD
The Focus aromatic profile paired with American-grown CBD isolate and formulated with 0.0% THC.
Forest
A MONQ Original blend led by fir, frankincense, and pinyon pine, with a green, resinous, forest-like aromatic profile.
Forest bathing
A mindful practice of spending time in a forest atmosphere, often called shinrin-yoku. It is a nature-immersion practice, not literal bathing.
Frankincense
An aromatic resin from Boswellia trees with citrus, pine, and warm resinous facets. It is prominent in Zen, Peace, and Forest.
Fresh
A MONQ Original blend led by ginger, lemon, and peppermint, with a crisp, bright, cooling aromatic profile.
Geranium
A leafy floral essential oil with green, rosy, and slightly minty facets. It appears as a supporting botanical in selected MONQ formulas.
Ginger
An aromatic rhizome with warm, spicy, lemony notes. It is a primary botanical in Focus, Fresh, and Relieve.
Glycerin (glycerol)
A colorless, slightly sweet liquid used in foods, cosmetics, and pharmaceuticals. In MONQ, plant-derived glycerin carries the essential-oil blend and helps form a light mist.
Grapefruit
A citrus fruit whose peel oil has a bright, tart, slightly bitter aroma. It appears as a supporting note in selected formulas.
Grounding
The subjective experience of feeling present, settled, and connected to the immediate moment. In MONQ language, grounding is an aromatic intention rather than a medical outcome.
Handheld aromatherapy diffuser
A compact device that gently warms an essential-oil formulation to produce a small amount of aromatic mist for personal use.
Happy
A MONQ Original blend led by fennel, thyme, and vanilla, with a warm, sweet, herbaceous aromatic profile.
Happy+CBD
The Happy aromatic profile paired with American-grown CBD isolate and formulated with 0.0% THC.
Hippocampus
A brain structure central to learning and memory. Its connection with olfactory pathways helps explain why scent can be strongly associated with remembered places and moments.
Homeostasis
The body’s regulation of internal conditions within workable ranges despite changes inside or outside the body.
Ingredient sensitivity
An unwanted response to a particular ingredient. Review the complete ingredient list and do not use a blend containing a known allergen or sensitivity.
Intention
The feeling, moment, or direction associated with a blend—such as focus, freshness, grounding, or wind-down. An intention describes the desired ritual, not a guaranteed outcome.
Internal state
A person’s moment-to-moment combination of felt emotion, attention, energy, bodily sensation, and readiness to act.
Interoception
The sensing and interpretation of signals from inside the body, such as breathing, heartbeat, temperature, tension, or fullness.
Jasmine
A highly aromatic flower with a rich, sweet, floral profile. It is one of the three primary botanicals in Sexy.
Juniper berry
The aromatic cone of the juniper plant, with a crisp, woody, evergreen scent. It is used as a supporting botanical in selected blends.
Lab-tested
A product description indicating that samples have been analyzed in a laboratory for defined characteristics. The exact meaning depends on the tests and specifications used.
Lavender
A flowering herb with a floral, herbal, lightly woody aroma. It is a primary botanical in Sleepy and supports several other formulas.
Lemon
A citrus fruit whose peel oil smells bright, clean, and zesty. Lemon is a primary botanical in Fresh and a supporting note in other blends.
Lemongrass
A tropical grass with an intense lemony, green aroma. It is used as a supporting botanical in selected MONQ blends.
Limbic system
A commonly used umbrella term for interconnected brain structures involved in emotion, motivation, and memory. Smell has unusually direct connections with parts of this network.
Lime
A citrus fruit with a tart, vivid, green-peel aroma. Lime is one of the three primary botanicals in Ocean.
Limonene
A citrus-scented terpene abundant in the peels and essential oils of lemons, oranges, limes, and other citrus fruits.
Linalool
A floral terpene found in lavender and many other aromatic plants. It contributes a soft, floral-herbal note.
Litsea cubeba
A small Asian tree whose fruit oil has a strong, fresh, lemon-like scent. It is used as a supporting citrus note in selected formulas.
Love
A MONQ Original blend led by cacao, peppermint, vanilla, and orange, with a warm, sweet, contrasting aromatic profile.
M.O.N.Q. — Modified Observation of Natural Qualia
A MONQ name expansion connecting the brand to conscious sensory experience. “Modified Observation of Natural Qualia” describes noticing how a natural aroma, intentional breath, and repeated ritual may change the felt quality of a moment.
Mandarin petitgrain
An essential oil distilled from the leaves and twigs of the mandarin tree, producing a green, citrus-floral aroma.
Marjoram
An aromatic herb with a warm, green, gently spicy profile. It appears as a supporting oil in selected blends.
Mindful breathing
Breathing with deliberate, nonjudgmental attention. The practice can create a pause in a routine independently of the aroma paired with it.
Monoterpene
A small, volatile terpene class common in essential oils. Limonene, alpha-pinene, and linalool are familiar examples.
MONQ
Pronounced “monk.” MONQ is the physician-founded personal aromatherapy company established in 2014 and the creator of the MONQ handheld diffuser.
MONQ Breath
MONQ’s mouth-to-nose technique: draw gently into the mouth, hold briefly, and exhale through the nose without inhaling into the lungs.
Mouth-to-nose method
Another name for the MONQ Breath and its retronasal route. Aromatic mist enters the mouth and leaves through the nose.
Narrow-leaf eucalyptus
A eucalyptus species used for its clean, fresh, camphoraceous oil. It is a supporting botanical in multiple MONQ formulas.
Neroli
Essential oil distilled from bitter-orange blossoms. Its aroma is floral, citrusy, green, and softly sweet.
Neuroplasticity
The nervous system’s ability to change its connections or responses through experience and repetition. It is one reason consistent sensory cues can become linked with habits.
Neurotransmitter
A chemical messenger released by nerve cells to communicate across a synapse. Different neurotransmitters participate in many overlapping brain and body functions.
No lung inhalation
The central MONQ use instruction. Keep the aromatic mist in the mouth and upper throat, then exhale through the nose without drawing it into the lungs.
No medical claims
MONQ products are not intended to diagnose, treat, cure, or prevent disease, and glossary descriptions should not be read as promises of clinical outcomes.
No Nicotine Ever.
MONQ’s standing formulation commitment: MONQ diffusers contain no nicotine and are not nicotine-delivery products.
Non-combustible use
MONQ produces aromatic mist through controlled warming, not by burning tobacco or plant material. Never puncture, burn, refill, or modify the diffuser.
Non-intoxicating
Not producing intoxication or a “high.” CBD itself is non-intoxicating, and MONQ +CBD products are formulated with 0.0% THC.
Ocean
A MONQ Original blend led by eucalyptus, lime, and tangerine, with a cool, bright, coastal-inspired aromatic profile.
Ocean+CBD
The Ocean aromatic profile paired with American-grown CBD isolate and formulated with 0.0% THC.
Odorant
A volatile molecule capable of activating the olfactory system and contributing to a perceived smell. Most familiar aromas contain many odorants at once.
Olfaction
The sense of smell: the biological process by which aromatic molecules are detected and interpreted by the nervous system.
Olfactory bulb
A brain structure that receives smell signals from olfactory receptor neurons and begins organizing that sensory information.
Olfactory epithelium
Specialized scent-detecting tissue high in the nasal cavity. It contains receptor neurons that respond to airborne aromatic molecules.
Olfactory receptor
A receptor protein used by sensory neurons to detect particular molecular features of an odorant. Patterns across many receptors create scent perception.
Orange
A sweet citrus note usually expressed from orange peel. It is a primary botanical in Zen and a supporting note in several other blends.
Organic USP glycerin
Plant-derived glycerin that is certified organic and meets United States Pharmacopeia identity and purity standards. It is MONQ’s formulation base.
Original diffuser
A MONQ handheld diffuser containing a proprietary essential-oil blend in organic vegetable glycerin, without CBD.
Orthonasal olfaction
Smelling aromas that enter through the nostrils, as when sniffing a flower or cup of coffee. Compare retronasal olfaction.
Paleo Air®
MONQ’s term for the terpene-rich air of plant-dense natural environments and the idea of reconnecting modern routines with botanical aromas.
Parasympathetic nervous system
A branch of the autonomic nervous system involved in functions associated with conservation, recovery, digestion, and routine maintenance. It works continuously with the sympathetic branch rather than simply switching on or off.
Patchouli
An aromatic leaf oil with earthy, woody, sweet, and slightly camphoraceous facets. It is a primary botanical in Sexy.
Pattern interrupt
A brief, deliberate action that breaks an automatic sequence and creates space for a different response. A sensory ritual can function as a pattern interrupt without promising a particular outcome.
Peace
A MONQ Original blend led by frankincense, rosemary, and yellow mandarin, with a resinous, herbal, softly citrus profile.
Peace+CBD
The Peace aromatic profile paired with American-grown CBD isolate and formulated with 0.0% THC.
Peppermint
A mint with a cool, sharp aroma associated with its menthol content. It is a primary botanical in Fresh and Love.
Personal aromatherapy diffuser
MONQ’s category-defining term for a handheld, breath-activated device that gives one person a focused aromatic experience rather than scenting an entire room. It gently warms an essential-oil blend into a light mist experienced through the mouth-to-nose method, without inhaling into the lungs. MONQ created the category in 2014.
Pinyon pine
A pine native to western North America, valued aromatically for dry, resinous, evergreen notes. It is a primary botanical in Forest.
Portable aromatherapy
Aromatherapy designed for personal, on-the-go use without a room diffuser, water reservoir, flame, or setup.
Presence
Attending to what is happening now rather than operating entirely on habit or distraction. Presence is a common intention in mindful and aromatic rituals.
Proprietary blend
A formula whose exact ingredient proportions are owned and kept confidential by its maker. MONQ discloses blend ingredients while retaining the precise recipe.
Qualia
The felt, first-person qualities of conscious experience—what it is like to smell lavender, see a color, feel warmth, or notice a mood. “Qualia” is plural; a single instance is sometimes called a “quale.”
Recommended frequency
MONQ recommends two to three gentle breaths per session, two to three sessions per day. Begin gently because individual sensitivity varies.
Relieve
A MONQ Original blend led by chamomile, copaiba, and ginger, with a warm, softly herbal, resinous aromatic profile. The name is a blend name, not a medical claim.
Rest-and-digest response
A popular shorthand for parasympathetic functions associated with routine restoration, digestion, and energy conservation. The nervous system is more dynamic than this phrase alone suggests.
Retronasal olfaction
Smell perception produced when aromatic molecules travel from the mouth and throat into the nasal cavity from behind, especially during exhalation. This is the pathway emphasized by the MONQ Breath.
Ritual
A small action repeated with intention. With MONQ, a ritual may pair a particular blend and breathing pause with a consistent time or context.
Ritual conditioning
MONQ’s phrase for repeatedly pairing an aroma, a breathing pattern, and a context so the combination becomes a familiar cue for that routine.
Rosemary
A Mediterranean herb with a brisk, herbaceous, camphoraceous aroma. It is a primary botanical in Focus and Peace.
Sage
An aromatic herb with a dry, green, earthy profile. Sage appears as a supporting botanical in selected MONQ blends.
Salience
The degree to which something stands out and captures attention or behavioral priority. Novel or personally meaningful aromas can be highly salient.
Scent memory
A memory or emotional association evoked by an aroma. Strong scent-memory links reflect close connections among olfactory, emotional, and memory networks.
Sensory adaptation
A normal decline in perceived intensity during continuous or repeated exposure to the same stimulus. In smell, an aroma may seem to fade even when it remains present.
Sensory cue
A sight, sound, aroma, taste, touch, or bodily sensation that signals a context or prompts an associated expectation or action.
Sensory ritual
A repeatable practice organized around one or more senses. MONQ combines aroma, breath, timing, and context into a portable sensory ritual.
Sesquiterpene
A terpene class generally larger and less volatile than monoterpenes. Many have woody, earthy, spicy, or resinous aromatic profiles.
Sexy
A MONQ Original blend led by cinnamon leaf, jasmine, and patchouli, with a warm, floral, earthy aromatic profile.
Signal transduction
The conversion of one kind of signal into another. In olfaction, receptor activation by an odorant is converted into electrical activity in sensory neurons.
Sleepy
A MONQ Original blend led by bergamot, chamomile, and lavender, created for an evening wind-down ritual. The name describes an intention, not a sedative effect.
Sleepy+CBD
The Sleepy aromatic profile paired with American-grown CBD isolate and formulated with 0.0% THC.
Spearmint
A mint with a sweet, cool, green aroma shaped largely by carvone. It appears as a supporting note in multiple blends.
State shift
A subjective change in how a moment feels—for example, moving from scattered to settled. The phrase describes an intention or experience, not treatment of a condition.
State-dependent learning
The observation that information or habits may be easier to retrieve when a person’s internal or environmental context resembles the context in which learning occurred.
Steam distillation
A traditional extraction process in which steam carries volatile compounds from plant material; the condensed liquid is then separated to collect essential oil.
Stop-use guidance
Stop using MONQ if coughing, irritation, dizziness, difficulty breathing, or another unexpected reaction occurs. Seek appropriate medical help for severe or persistent symptoms.
Sympathetic nervous system
A branch of the autonomic nervous system that helps mobilize energy and attention during activity, challenge, or perceived threat. It also supports ordinary functions and is not inherently harmful.
Tangerine
A sweet citrus fruit with a soft, juicy peel aroma. It is a primary botanical in Ocean.
Tea tree
An Australian botanical whose leaf oil has a fresh, sharp, medicinal-herbal aroma. It is used as a supporting oil in selected blends.
Terpene
A large family of plant-produced compounds, many of which are aromatic. Terpenes help create the characteristic scents of citrus, flowers, herbs, spices, and forests.
Terpene deficiency
A MONQ hypothesis describing reduced everyday exposure to the diverse plant aromatics common in natural environments. It is not a recognized medical diagnosis.
Third-party lab testing
Analysis performed by an independent laboratory rather than only by the manufacturer. Tests may verify identity, purity, potency, or the absence of selected contaminants.
Thyme
An aromatic herb with warm, green, spicy notes. It is one of the three primary botanicals in Happy.
Top, middle, and base notes
Perfumery terms for how quickly aromatic materials are perceived and fade. Top notes appear first, middle notes shape the body, and base notes tend to linger.
Turmeric
A rhizome related to ginger with earthy, warm, spicy aromatic qualities. It appears as a supporting botanical in selected formulas.
USP
United States Pharmacopeia, an organization that publishes public quality standards for medicines, food ingredients, and related substances. “USP grade” means a material is intended to meet an applicable monograph.
Vagus nerve
A major cranial nerve carrying signals between the brain and organs in the chest and abdomen. It participates in parasympathetic regulation, but broad “vagus nerve” wellness claims should be interpreted cautiously.
Vanilla
An aromatic orchid-derived material with a sweet, warm, creamy profile. It is a primary botanical in Happy and Love.
Vegetable glycerin
Plant-derived glycerin used as the carrier base in MONQ diffusers. Current MONQ guidance describes the formulation as approximately 80% glycerin and 20% essential-oil blend.
Volatile compound
A substance that readily enters the air at ordinary temperatures. Volatility allows aromatic molecules to travel to the nose and be smelled.
Wellness ritual
A repeatable personal practice intended to support general well-being, such as mindful breathing, journaling, stretching, or intentional aromatherapy.
Who should not use MONQ
MONQ guidance excludes people who are underage, pregnant or nursing, have asthma, COPD or another respiratory illness, or have a relevant ingredient allergy or sensitivity.
Yellow mandarin
A mandarin citrus oil with a soft, sweet, bright peel aroma. It is one of the three primary botanicals in Peace.
Ylang-ylang
A tropical flower with a rich, sweet, floral aroma. It is one of the three primary botanicals in Zen.
Zen
A MONQ Original blend led by frankincense, orange, and ylang-ylang, created for a grounding, centering aromatic ritual.
Zen+CBD
The Zen aromatic profile paired with American-grown CBD isolate and formulated with 0.0% THC.
