Hyssop Essential Oil – A Fragrant Oil with a Range of Health Benefits

hyssop eo

Hyssop essential oil has been used since ancient times to remedy a wide variety of health issues. It is a member of the mint family and looks very similar to lavender. Yet, it is unique in its composition and has an abundance of health benefits.

Today, hyssop essential oil is used to alleviate respiratory symptoms, fight off infections, promote healthy circulation, and more.

HyssopThe History of Hyssop

Hyssop is botanically known as Hyssopus officinalis. It is a member of the Lamiaceae family, which also includes herbs like mint, rosemary, basil, lavender, sage, and oregano. The hyssop plant is native to the Mediterranean but is now cultivated throughout most of Europe.1 The name is derived from the Hebrew word ezob, which means “holy herb.” 2

The hyssop plant is a shrub that can grow up to 24 inches (61 cm) tall. It has dark green leaves and fragrant purple-blue, pink, and white flowers. The plant has been used since ancient times and was even one of the herbs mentioned in the Bible.

Additionally, Hippocrates praised the herb for its ability to relieve respiratory symptoms, and the ancient Romans used it to protect against the plague, as well as for its properties as an aphrodisiac. Hyssop was even used in pagan ceremonies to purify worshippers.3

In the Middle East, hyssop was used to cleanse and purify temples. On the other hand, the Cherokee used an infusion of hyssop to induce menstruation and reduce fevers. A syrup of the plant was also used by the Cherokee to relieve respiratory symptoms such as colds, coughs, and asthma. 4

Chemical Properties

Hyssop essential oil is steam distilled from the leaves and flowering tops of Hyssopus officinalis. The resulting oil is clear to pale yellow in color and has a sweet, woody, herbal scent.

The essential oil is known to have astringent, antispasmodic, antimicrobial, carminative, cicatrizant, digestive, diuretic, and expectorant properties. 5 This is all due to its powerful chemical composition, which includes:

1,8 cineole is also commonly known as eucalyptol. Eucalyptol is known for its anti-inflammatory, analgesic, and cicatrizant properties. It is also a particularly good disinfectant and is helpful for remedying respiratory conditions.

Pinene is known for its ability to clear the lungs and promote proper breathing, and limonene is known for its anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties. Camphene is an antiviral, antifungal, and expectorant, while myrcene is an analgesic and sedative.

All of these terpenes work together to create an essential oil with an incredible amount of health benefits.

Hyssop essential oil can be used both aromatically and topically to remedy symptoms of respiratory conditions, relieve muscle pain, and support a healthy immune system.

Remedies Symptoms of Respiratory Conditions

Hyssop essential oil can be used to relieve symptoms of a cough, cold, flu, congestion, bronchitis, asthma, and allergies. Hyssop contains antispasmodic properties, which help reduce spasms and relieve a cough.

It is also known as an expectorant, which can help loosen excess phlegm trapped in the lungs and respiratory tract. Furthermore, the antimicrobial properties of this essential oil help fight off harmful pathogens that cause the illnesses in the first place.

If you’re suffering from a respiratory condition, diffuse hyssop essential oil throughout the home. Alternatively, add a few drops to a bowl of hot water and breathe in the healing vapors or mix with a carrier oil and massage gently onto the chest and neck.

Fights Off Infections and Heals Wounds

This essential oil contains antimicrobial properties, which can help fight off infection from minor wounds such as burns, bites, scrapes, and cuts. It also promotes healing of wounds and reduces the chance of scarring.

To treat minor wounds and prevent infection, mix a few drops of hyssop essential with a carrier oil and apply directly to the affected area.

To reduce the appearance of scars, mix with a nourishing carrier oil such as jojoba and apply directly to the scar a couple of times a day.

For a natural way to treat acne, add a drop of hyssop essential oil to your daily cleanser or moisturizer.

Soothes Sore Muscles

A 2002 study tested the muscle-relaxing activity of hyssop essential oil on guinea pig and rabbit intestines, with the results showing that the oil had muscle-relaxing properties. 7

In addition to the antispasmodic and anti-inflammatory properties of the oil, it is ideal for soothing and relaxing sore muscles. It can also help reduce cramps and spasms.

To relieve sore muscles after a long day, mix a few drops of hyssop essential oil with a carrier oil and gently massage onto the sore areas. You can also add a few drops of hyssop essential oil to a warm bath.

Promotes Skin Health

Hyssop essential oil has astringent properties, which help tone the skin and reduce signs of aging such as fine lines and wrinkles. Coupled with its ability to fight off infection and reduce the appearance of scars, you’ll have beautiful, young-looking skin in no time. Hyssop essential oil can also help reduce the appearance and symptoms of skin conditions such as psoriasis and eczema.

To keep skin looking young and healthy, add a drop or two of hyssop essential oil into your moisturizer, cleanser, lotion or other fragrance-free creams.

Promotes Proper Digestion

This essential oil is a stimulant, which helps increase the production of bile, acid, and digestive enzymes. All of these help break down food in the stomach and assist with the digestive process.

It also helps to promote peristaltic motion in the intestines, which further assists the digestive process. Additionally, the carminative properties of this oil help relieve flatulence and can reduce indigestion, nausea, loss of appetite, and heartburn. 8

To promote proper digestion, mix a few drops of this essential oil with a carrier oil and massage onto the lower abdomen. Alternatively, diffuse the oil throughout a room or keep a bottle on hand to sniff throughout the day.

Detoxifies the Body

The diuretic properties of hyssop essential oil help increase urination and assist in the removal of excess fats, salts, and water. This essential oil also acts as a febrifuge, which can reduce fevers by increased sweating and toxin removal.

By removing unwanted toxins from your body, hyssop essential oil strengthens your immune system and helps your body fight off illnesses.

To aid in the detoxing process, diffuse hyssop essential oil throughout the home. You can also mix a few drops with a carrier oil and gently massage onto the soles of your feet to reduce fevers.

Disinfects the Home

Simply diffusing hyssop essential oil throughout the home can rid the air of harmful pathogens, allowing you and your family to remain healthy.

You can mix hyssop with other disinfecting essential oils such as tea tree, lemon, or eucalyptus to extend its cleansing properties.

Safety and Precautions

Hyssop essential oil is safe for topical and aromatic use but should not be taken internally. This oil can irritate sensitive skin, so it is recommended to dilute it in a carrier oil before applying topically. Always conduct a patch skin test to ensure there are no sensitive or allergic reactions before applying to larger areas of the body.

Since hyssop essential oil is known to induce menstruation, it should be avoided by women who are pregnant or nursing.

If you have epilepsy or a history of seizures, do not use this oil.

Due to the presence of pinocamphone, this oil is known to stimulate the nerves and can cause convulsions if used in excess. Thus, it should not be used on children, and adults should not exceed more than 30 drops of the oil a day.

If you have a history of high blood pressure, consult with a doctor before using hyssop essential oil. Additionally, consult with your doctor before attempting to use hyssop essential oil to treat a chronic condition.

If hyssop essential oil is stored correctly in a cool, dark place, it should last for 4–5 years. 9

Plate Tectonics: Are Continents and Oceans Moving?

Since Earth formed, the continents have been in constant motion. This motion is very slight and occurs over millions of years, but exists nonetheless.
