The group that used the black pepper essential oil noted the greatest reduction in cravings. They also experienced the greatest reduction in symptoms associated with nicotine withdrawal, such as anxiety. One study tested the efficacy of angelica oil and black pepper oil as aromatherapy treatments for nicotine cravings. The participants in the study were students, staff, or faculty at a Texas college who consumed nicotine daily. This includes smokers and users of chewing tobacco or snuff.
Participants in the study inhaled drops of the essential oils placed on tissue paper. Their nicotine cravings were tested prior to inhalation, after inhalation, and then again several minutes later. Some participants had only black pepper oil, some had angelica oil, and others had no oil at all. It was discovered that patients with black pepper oil experienced the greatest decrease in cravings. However, those who used angelica oil also went longer before smoking their next cigarette in comparison to participants who did not inhale essential oils.
Using Essential Oils to Reduce Nicotine Cravings
