Buddha Wood Essential Oil

Buddha Wood Essential Oil: A Warm, Grounding Australian Aromatic
Buddha wood essential oil is one of the more quietly distinctive aromatics to emerge from the Australian botanical world. Distilled from the heartwood and roots of Eremophila mitchellii, a small tree that grows across the dry inland regions of Queensland and New South Wales, buddha wood oil has a warm, dry, slightly sweet woody aroma that draws natural comparisons to sandalwood - though its character is distinctly its own.
The oil is produced by steam distillation of the dense, resinous heartwood. Eremophila mitchellii is an extremely slow-growing tree, which historically limited commercial supply. The oil's color ranges from pale yellow to golden amber, and its viscosity is moderate - thicker than many top note oils, but not as heavy as vetiver or patchouli.
Aromatic Profile
Buddha wood's aroma is characterized by its grounding, meditative quality. The base note is warm, dry, and woody - reminiscent of sandalwood but earthier and more austere. There is a faint sweetness and a very slight spicy or balsamic undertone. The aroma has good tenacity on skin and in blends, and functions beautifully as a base note or fixative in complex formulations.
Key aromatic constituents include eremophilane-type sesquiterpenes unique to the Eremophila genus, which contribute to its unusual and hard-to-replicate scent character. Unlike Indian sandalwood or Australian sandalwood (Santalum spicatum), buddha wood has a drier, slightly more herbal quality at its edges.
Buddha Wood in Aromatherapy and Meditation
In aromatherapy, buddha wood is valued for the quality of stillness it brings to a blend. Its warm, dry wood note creates a grounding foundation that many practitioners find supportive for meditation practice, deep breathing exercises, and moments of intentional stillness. Like frankincense and sandalwood, buddha wood has historical associations with sacred space across cultures.
Buddha wood blends naturally with other resinous and woody aromatics: sandalwood, cedarwood, frankincense, myrrh, vetiver, and patchouli. In MONQ blends, buddha wood contributes an earthy warmth and depth that complements lighter botanical notes. To use MONQ, inhale gently through your mouth and exhale through your nose, allowing the aromatic blend to move through your nasal passages where it is most fully experienced.
