I have traveled a lot, and some cities and countries are quite shy and understated. That’s one thing that is definitely not true about Germany, and most certainly not about Berlin.
Berlin is bold, strong, and confident. It is a city that makes no compromises and that knows exactly what it is. Almost 100 years ago, a hit song proclaimed that the air in Berlin had a sweet fragrance. The air in Berlin may indeed have a sweetness to it, but it also has dashes of pine and hazelnut.
Confidence and Clarity
I have visited Germany many times, and to me, it is a city of growth. During my first trip, I attempted to buy a return train ticket in broken German, and mistakenly purchased a one-way ticket only. On my attempted return, I had a run-in with an intimidating, but kindly train conductor who understood my mistake. My second trip was far more successful, and I have fond memories of hanging out, drinking craft beers and hazelnut coffees.
Perhaps that is where the hazelnut association comes from, although it’s fair to say that in Germany, citizens love nussbutter—nut butter— in croissants, crumbles, and more. Ditsch, a bakery that offers surprisingly tasty snack food and that appears to be ubiquitous in Germany, offers so many hazelnut products that it might as well be the national food
Remembering Germany with Hazelnut Oil
Hazelnut oil is a great carrier oil that provides a lot of healing properties on its own. It is high in Vitamin E, which means that it’s good for your skin, and it is non-greasy, so it won’t clog pores.

I love using hazelnut essential oil to take me back to the time I spent in Germany, to those memories of sipping hazelnut coffees or digging into croissants slathered with nussbutter.
Berlin and the Refreshing Scent of Pine
The smell of pine scent is another scent that anybody who passes through Germany will remember. It’s not as strong in central Berlin, but if you head outside of the city, the presence of the scent is unmistakable, and it’s a true breath of fresh air while you’re on your holiday.
After I return home, I love using pine essential oil to not only remember Germany, but to reap the range of health benefits that it provides. Pine essential oil reduces inflammation and clears the nose and throat from sinus infections. Additionally, it helps boost immune system function, while serving as an antiviral and antifungal agent.
Pine essential oil is something that I’ve incorporated into a lot of aromatherapy options, including adding a few drops into my room diffuser or taking it on the go with a portable aromatherapy diffuser like Forest, Ocean, or Mountain MONQ. Overall, the scent of pine fits Berlin very well.
My memories of Berlin are of a place where everyone, from those you met on the Deutsche Bahn,—the train— to the hotel staff, and the restaurant workers, were polite, firm, and on-task. Passerby was seemingly always on a mission, yet never too busy to stop and help.
Know Who You Are
On my travels, I’ve felt like some cities have a bit of identity crisis. Berlin, however, knows what it is and where it is, and it doesn’t try to be anything else. It exudes confidence, which inspires me to also radiate this same confidence. Hopefully, if you visit, you’ll take away the same no-nonsense, simple, and strong feeling, and create some wonderful memories.
When I am stressed or tired, I relax with a hazelnut-scented candle lit in the bathroom. When I’m stressed but need an energy boost, I turn to an aromatherapy treatment with sandalwood and pine. That combo always picks me up and helps me take on the tasks of the day ahead while taking me back to streets of Berlin.
