Do Nutrients Affect Different People in Different Ways?

When it comes to losing weight and maintaining a healthy diet, the basic theory is that you should try to adhere to a diet that you like and that you believe you can consistently stick to. The idea is that you are going to be much more likely to stick to a diet if you enjoy following it.

However, there is new research that indicates this might not necessarily be the best approach. In fact, studies have shown that it is actually beneficial to have a diet assigned to you as you are going to be much more likely to stick to it.1

One of the issues likely causing this sort of result is the fact that choosing a diet with foods that you regularly enjoy eating might be much more difficult to scale back on. On the other hand, if you are choosing to stick to a diet that doesn’t feature the same temptation, you will be much less likely to fall into old habits and overeat.

Being able to find the right diet comes down to understanding the metabolic factors at play versus attempting to follow taste and preference. After all, a lot of research has shown that nutrients can affect different people in different ways.

Because of this, you can’t simply deploy a one diet approach for everyone. Because everyone has a different body composition, and because there are other differences at play, a diet that is optimized for one person is not likely to be optimized for another. Highlighted below is the reasoning behind why diets affect individuals differently.

Nutritional SupplementsGut Bacteria

There has been a lot of research showing that gut bacteria can actually have on individual ability to lose weight. One particular study showed that bacteria found in the guts of mice actually changed after they had gastric bypass surgery.

During the study, researchers transplanted the same bacteria into sterile mice who had not had the surgery, and these mice lost weight much more easily.2 This means that the bacteria that was present post-surgery actually altered the mice’s ability to lose weight even more than the surgery itself.

This was an important revelation because it provides evidence that the gut bacteria or microbes found in individual digestive systems have an important impact on overall health and differences in individual ability to lose weight.

Blood Sugar LevelsNutritional Supplements

Blood sugar is something that has a critical role in various bodily systems. In fact, it is closely associated with a range of health issues, including obesity and diabetes.

However, one study showed that blood sugar spikes are not only a result of differences in foods but also differences in individuals. The study showed that the glycemic index (GI) of any specific food is not a set value. Instead, it is based on the difference in individual responses to the food.3

While it’s good to think about giving each food a GI value to make it easier to understand each its potential impact, it’s not that simple. Different foods can affect people in different ways depending on their own individual digestive systems and genetic makeup.

Nutritional SupplementsVitamin or Mineral Deficiencies

Another big reason why different nutrients can affect people in different ways is that not everyone is going to have the same nutritional requirements. This is mainly because not everyone will have the same nutritional deficiencies to fill in.

Regardless of the reason, if you have nutritional deficiencies, it is going to impact the way that each nutrient affects your body. For instance, if you are deficient in vitamin K, taking in just vitamin D supplements won’t do you much good because you are going to be missing the vitamin K required for proper vitamin D absorption.4 Therefore, you want to be sure to address your individual deficiencies rather than the nutritional deficiencies that are simply the most common in society.

Lifestyle ChoicesNutritional Supplements

Another significant reason why a lot of people have different effects from various nutrients has to do with various lifestyle decisions they make. For example, research has shown that smokers of 20 cigarettes daily had the lowest levels of vitamin C dietary intake.5

Another key player in this lifestyle choices category is alcohol which can also impact the breakdown of nutrients. Alcohol inhibits the breakdown of nutrients by decreasing the secretion of a necessary digestive enzyme from the pancreas.6 It essentially makes the body less efficient at being able to properly break down the nutrients and transport them.

Along with this, alcohol can negatively impact the mechanisms the body uses to control blood glucose levels, which can either increase or decrease blood sugar levels in the body.7

How To Improve Nutrient Absorption with Essential Oils

Nutritional SupplementsManage Stress Levels

One of the very best ways to improve your ability to properly absorb nutrients is to manage your stress levels because high-stress levels can negatively affect digestive health.8

One of the best way to better manage your stress levels is by using essential oils through aromatherapy. Using proven essential oils for lowering stress, like lavender, can do wonders for limiting your stress levels.9

You can use these essential oils topically after dilution with a carrier oil or aromatically in a room diffuser or personal diffuser like Zen MONQ.

Improve Digestion

Believe it or not, but essential oils can play a crucial role in promoting a better digestive system function. Oregano oil and thyme oil have been shown to effectively reduce intestinal inflammation in mice with colitis. It does so by effectively increasing healthy bacteria in the gut.

Other essential oils that have been shown to have a positive impact on optimizing digestion are peppermint oil and rosemary oil.

For an easy on the go option, try using some of these essential oils in a personal diffuser like Healthy MONQ.

Overall, there are plenty of different things that can impact how a specific nutrient impacts one person versus another. Realizing for these differences and accounting for them is an important first step any individual can take for optimizing their health.
