Living a wellness lifestyle involves making daily choices that benefit the various aspects or pillars of wellness. These pillars include social, physical, environmental, emotional, intellectual, spiritual, financial, and occupational. Depending on who you ask, there may be more or fewer pillars, but the overall concept remains the same. What’s very interesting is that you can improve many of these areas by incorporating essential oils.

Physical wellness is all about taking care of the body. This includes nutrition, physical exercise, and sleep. You can incorporate essential oils in two of those three areas and improve them tremendously. Essential oils do not play a crucial role in nutritional wellness and it’s often advised that you do not ingest them. However, the plants from which these oils are derived are often packed with healthy nutrients and minerals.

The use of essential oils and aromatherapy in relation to physical exercise are varied. The ability to use aromatherapy to alleviate pain and fatigue caused by exercise is well-documented. This makes it easier to continue with a  healthy exercise regimen without suffering from constant pains and aches.

Rosemary oil and peppermint essential oil have both been shown to alleviate the fatigue caused by exercise and to provide a stimulating effect1. The best way to utilize these oils is to diffuse them individually or in a blend immediately after completing your exercise routine.

In the same way, the duration and quality of your sleep will impact your physical health in multiple ways. A poor sleep routine can be linked to weight gain, high blood pressure, increased risk of heart disease, and a weakened immune system. The only way to overcome these obstacles is to ensure you are getting between 7 and 9 hours of sleep each night. That can be very difficult for some people.

Once again, the diffusion of essential oils can be incorporated into your wellness lifestyle to help with this problem. Several different essential oils have sedative qualities, promote relaxation, and can improve the quality of your sleep. Lavender, chamomile, frankincense, and ylang-ylang are all known to have these qualities2.

Environmental wellness is all about your connection with your environment. This applies on a small scale, such as your immediate surroundings, as well as your connection with the Earth itself. Your connection with your environment is not a one-way street. You must consider how you affect your environment and how your environment affects you.

You can improve your immediate connection with your environment as well as your relationship with the planet by incorporating essential oils. First, consider your immediate environment. This might be your desk at work or perhaps you are sitting on a couch in the living room. Immediate stimuli that will impact your environmental wellness include the clutter around you, the noise that you hear, and the air that you breathe.

Of those three aspects, essential oils have the potential to improve the air that you breathe. Indoor air quality has a negative effect on millions of people every year. In 2016, more than 2 million deaths were linked to indoor air pollution3. Even if the quality of the air in your house isn’t bad enough to kill someone, it still lacks many natural compounds found outdoors that benefit wellness.

Plant terpenes are a perfect example of natural compounds that are rarely found indoors. Yet these compounds have been linked to numerous health benefits. Luckily, there is a way to improve your immediate environment by bringing these terpenes indoors: aromatherapy. Terpenes are actually the basic building blocks of all essential oils and they are released into the surrounding air when the oil is diffused.

Essential oils can also improve environmental wellness on a larger scale. Consider all of the chemicals that are dumped into the world on a daily basis. They may be used as infanticides, to deter pests, in cleaning supplies, or as synthetic fragrances in any number of products. All of these chemicals have a negative impact on the environment, which eventually causes the environment to have a negative impact on our health as well as the health of future generations.

You can do your part to reduce the global chemical output by relying on safe and natural alternatives when possible. All of the chemicals products mentioned above can be replicated with the use of essential oils. For example, lavender essential oil can deter various insects, such as beetles, mosquitoes, and moths4.

Many essential oils have powerful antibacterial properties that make them perfect for cleaning supplies. Essential oils have been shown to kill some of the worst bacteria imaginable, include E.coli, influenza, pneumonia, and salmonella5. In many cases, it’s a matter of finding the right essential oil for the environment you will be cleaning.

The Other Pillars

Environmental and physical wellness are only two areas of concern when living a wellness lifestyle. Aromatherapy and essential oils can be used in other areas as well. They can certainly have a positive impact on emotional, intellectual, and spiritual wellness. Essential oils are a crucial part of spiritual ceremonies around the world. As a matter of fact, some of the earliest uses of essential oils were spiritual.

As for emotional wellness, many studies have shown that the terpenes found in essential oils can relieve stress, help cope with depression, and overcome anxiety. A collection of more than 600 studies was recently gathered for analysis. The results showed that aromatherapy could be used as an effective treatment for depressive symptoms despite previous arguments that it was not effective6.

As you can see, essential oils and aromatherapy can improve your wellness lifestyle in many different ways. This doesn’t mean you need to wake up breathing essential oils and do so throughout the entire day. It simply means that you should find simple ways to incorporate these oils that will have the most impact. Consider using a diffuser in the morning to stimulate the mind and prepare you for the day ahead. Or perhaps use it after a workout to alleviate sore muscles. However you choose to use these oils, they are sure to have a positive impact.
