Natural Remedies for Urinary Tract Infections

Urinary tract infections (UTIs) are very common. In fact, they affect a lot of people each year. Many assume that they are limited to women, but both men and women can suffer from them. However, they are much more common in women primarily because the urethra is shorter in women than men. Because of this, bacteria have a shorter path to travel to enter the bladder.

These infections are so common that almost half of women experience a UTI at some point.1 While the traditional method to treat UTIs is with antibiotics, it is sometimes better to seek natural alternatives as the overuse of antibiotics can really do more harm than intended. Or, these natural methods can be used in conjunction with antibiotics.

Highlighted in this article are some of the key natural remedies that you want to consider implementing in order to fight UTIs.

Remedies for Fighting UTIs

One of the best ways to combat UTIs is by ensuring that you are providing your body enough healthy bacteria to fight against the bad bacteria in your body. Taking probiotics is one of the best ways to do so effectively.

Studies have specifically shown that taking probiotics was effective at reducing the occurrence of urinary tract infections in women.2 Not only are probiotics a good way to prevent UTIs, but they can be a good way to get rid of a UTI faster.

Be Proactive

Another good habit that can help minimize the risk of contracting a UTI is simply being proactive by adhering to lifestyle habits help minimize the chances of getting an infection.

For instance, you should avoid holding your bladder for too long. Always try to go to the bathroom when you have to. By holding in your urine for too long, you can cause a significant build-up of “bad” bacteria which can result in an infection in your bladder.3

Another excellent remedy that you can use when you are looking to get rid of and/or prevent a UTI would be to drink fresh cranberry juice. However, it is important that you are drinking fresh juice that hasn’t been sweetened or processed.

Natural cranberry juice is a great way to relieve yourself of a UTI because cranberry juice contains at least two inhibitors of lectin-mediated adherence of uropathogens to eukaryotic cells, which can help keep bacteria from being able to bind itself to the urinary tract entirely.4

This makes it difficult to contract the infection in the first place because there need to be bacteria present for the infection to exist.

Drink More Water

One of the best ways to help prevent UTIs is by continuing to hydrate yourself regularly.5 If you’re staying hydrated and constantly flushing your urinary tract, bacteria is going to have a very difficult time binding to it.

Sex Habits

If you are going to be having sex and you are someone that is prone to UTIs, you might want to avoid using any products that have spermicides in them. Spermicides are known to increase inflammation and irritation, which can cause a breeding ground for bacteria.

Because of this, you should be looking to use condoms and other products that do not contain them at all. Along with this, you are going to want to be sure to urinate after sexual intercourse. By urinating after intercourse, you will be able to flush out your urinary tract to ensure that the bacteria that might have entered during intercourse is not capable of latching on.


There are a lot of different home remedies that you can use to fight against urinary tract infections. If you are someone that frequently suffers from them or you are looking for natural ways to relieve one, you will want to try out some of the methods above.

Keep in mind: the effectiveness of each method is different for everyone, and a lot of the methods above are preventative measures to stop UTIs from occurring in the first place. Additionally, these methods should be viewed as a complement to conventional treatment options, such as antibiotics—not an alternative.
