Cityscape: The Scent of Cedarwood in Vancouver

Vancouver, Canada

Many individuals who have traveled around the world have something in common: a shared love for returning home to their roots. There is nothing quite like the feeling of arriving in the city where you were born and raised, and where you now permanently live. For me, this is the city of Vancouver in the beautiful province of British Columbia. Over the years, Vancouver has grown into one of the most beautiful cities in the world, located next to the Pacific Ocean with gorgeous snow-capped mountains to the north.

Discovering Essential Oils

When traveling to different parts of the world, I always make it a priority to learn about the local language, culture, and health practices of the area. Recently, when I was traveling throughout Asia, I discovered the benefits of essential oils, which come in a range of scents and provide a variety of health benefits.

The essential oil that became my favorite is cedarwood essential oil. As a student of the Bible, it was interesting to discover that the cedar tree is the tree mentioned most frequently in the Bible, symbolizing a source of wisdom, protection, and abundance. The essential oil is made via steam distillation of the wood pieces from a cedar tree. The primary components in cedarwood essential oil include cedrol, alpha-cedrene, a group of sesquiterpenes, beta-cedrene, widdrol, and thujopsene. All of these compounds have been shown to provide health benefits.

Vancouver and Cedarwood Essential Oil

One of the major attractions in Vancouver is Stanley Park, which is located on a peninsula on the northwestern edge of downtown Vancouver. Each year, more than eight million visitors enjoy this 1,000-acre gem located next to a major metropolis. Stanley Park has been acknowledged as one of the world’s greatest urban parks, offering both visitors and locals miles of well-maintained dirt and paved trails, beaches, a world-renowned aquarium, a miniature railway, a waterpark, and so much more.

Though when people hear about Canada, they more often than not think of ice and snow, Vancouver has a mild temperate climate year-round, which makes any day of the year in Stanley Park an enjoyable day for exploring and adventure.

What I truly enjoy about this beautiful natural location is the smell. As you stroll along the paths and trails, you cannot help but notice the aroma of cedar. The park is home to more than 500,000 hemlock, fir, and cedar trees, allowing you to experience a pristine coastal forest. There is also an ever-blooming garden of colorful flowers and shrubs on display.

These memories of strolls through Stanley Park is probably the main reason I associate Vancouver with cedarwood essential oil. When I travel, I take a vial of this oil with me wherever I go for two main reasons: to have a scent that reminds me of home, and to help alleviate the inflammation I experience from arthritis.

For years I have endured a condition called ankylosing spondylitis, an arthritic condition that slowly fuses the bones throughout a person’s body. This fusion causes inflammation of the tissues and joints, often producing an uncomfortable or debilitating pain. For me, cedarwood essential oil has proven beneficial in alleviating this pain. To reduce inflammation and joint stiffness, I either apply the oil to my skin or use it aromatically. I also have found it beneficial to include a few drops in a warm bath.

For me, the discovery of essential oils during my travels was an unexpected blessing. Cedarwood essential oil allows me to function better every day so that I can enjoy the many adventures that world travel offers. However, like many world travelers, I too enjoy returning home. And even when I’m away, the smell of cedarwood essential oil takes me back to my favorite city in the world, Vancouver.
