If there is one travel destination that has captured the imagination of travelers from all over the world, it’s Bali. This island paradise is widely recognized as one of the most beautiful vacation spots on the planet.
However, it is not only the natural beauty of Bali that captivates; it is far more than that. People who have spent time on the island speak of a transformational experience, one in which the island and its people cause individuals to reexamine what it means to be human and interact with the world around them.
The first time I encountered the unique sights, sounds and smells of Bali was simply while walking through the streets. I immediately experienced the scent of burning incense that permeates the air around the island. There are many different types of incense, but they fill the air with a scent that mingles with the native frangipani—a signature flower used in offerings, religious ceremonies, or for decoration—to create the unique smell of Bali.
The Taste of Bali: Cooking
Cooking was also an important part of my Bali experience. A trip to a Bali night market revealed a culture steeped in a variety of influences from across the globe. Balinese cooking is a delight that engages all the senses.
And the scents! Coriander, aromatic ginger, lemongrass, galangal, pepper, chilis, coconut, and nutmeg—a medley of different experiences that will cause you to fall in love with Bali.
Remembering Bali with Ylang-Ylang and Lemongrass
So if I could choose scents that remind me of Bali, that bottle up its essence, it would be the scent of ylang-ylang and lemongrass and their essential oils. Ylang-ylang is simply one of the most attractive fragrances in the world, in addition to being credited with the ability to improve mood and alleviate stress. Meanwhile, lemongrass has a fresh and refreshing scent, which has also been shown to improve mood.
