Finding Sinus Pressure Relief

Sinus pressure can have many causes, but when the membranes of your nasal passages are inflamed, the swelling can make it seem impossible to breathe, and the pain can be debilitating enough to keep you from living your life to the fullest.

If that sinus pressure is the result of allergies, you could spend months struggling to find an effective solution to ease headaches and restore natural breathing.

Most people know that they can pop a few acetaminophen tablets to ease headache pain, but if you take them too often, and you run the risk of liver damage and other health concerns.

Cold medicines to relieve sinus pain and pressure can leave you feeling dizzy and light-headed, and they only mask the problems, so when the medicine wears off, the sinus pressure returns with a vengeance.

Essential oils are simple, natural ways to relieve pain without the potential side effects of other treatment options. Additionally, most contain compounds that can help remedy the underlying problems, so sinus pressure and the accompanying headaches go away more quickly.

There are many different oils that address pain and sinus pressure, so it shouldn’t be too difficult to find one or a few essential oils that work well for you. If you’re having trouble deciding, try Relieve—a blend designed to help with aches, pains, and allergies.

Pain-Relieving Essential Oils Erase Discomfort Fast

sleepy blendLavender Essential Oil

Lavender is one of the most versatile essential oils. First, it can ease stress, which can help begin to alleviate the pain associated with sinus pressure, but it also acts as an analgesic, relieving pain naturally.

One of the worst symptoms of sinus pressure is a headache, and according to a 2012 study appearing in the European Neurology, aromatic use of lavender was a safe and effective remedy option for headache pain.1

Lavender can be found in Sleepy MONQ which can help you relax so restorative sleep comes easier. You can also put a sachet of lavender flowers beneath your pillow or place a few drops of essential oil on pulse points to help ease the pain. You can also mix a few drops of lavender oil with water and spritz the mixture over your bedding before you go to sleep.

This essential not only helps clear nasal passages because of its exhilarating aroma, but it also can ease the headache pain associated with sinus pressure. A 2013 Korean study in  Evidence-Based Complementary and Alternative Medicine found that eucalyptus essential oil was an effective remedy option for post-surgical pain relief and inflammation, supporting its efficacy as a headache remedy.2

Eucalyptus is one of the main essential oils in our the Ocean blend, a customer favorite that brings to mind relaxing waves crashing on the beach and helps headache-inducing tension wash away.

Eucalyptus can also be used with a carrier oil—flaxseed oil contains alpha-linolenic acid, which also helps relieve pain—and placed on pulse points.

Ginger and other members of the Zingiberaceae family—turmeric and galangal—have been used medicinally for centuries due to their pain-relieving benefits.

A 2012 study in Nutrition Journal found that ginger essential oil was as effective at remedying pain as non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, more commonly known as NSAIDs.Experts at the website Practical Pain Management also said that ginger essential oil was an effective remedy for headache pain.4

Ginger is one of the main essential oils in Relieve. To take advantage of its healing, pain-relieving benefits, follow the product instructions and take three short breaths, three times a day, blowing the vapor out through your nose so the oils can interact with your olfactory receptors.

Cinnamon Leaf Essential Oil

Cinnamon contains two powerful compounds to target pain: eugenol and cinnamaldehyde. Cinnamaldehyde also helps control inflammation, so it has the potential to reduce the swelling causing the sinus pressure.

2014 research from Malaysian scientists that appeared in the Evidence-Based Complementary and Alternative Medicine found that cinnamon leaf helped ease inflammation, which could reduce the swelling causing sinus pressure, bringing down pain levels as well.

Clove Essential Oil

Clove oil is a pain-relieving powerhouse, as it contains the volatile compounds eugenol and cinnamaldehyde, both of which are effective options for easing pain.

A 2006 study in the Journal of Dentistry found that clove essential oil was as effective at relieving topical pain as benzocaine. When combined with the pain-relieving benefits of cinnamaldehyde, clove oil is an excellent option for easing the pain of sinus pressure.

Final Thoughts

If you’re experiencing sinus pressure and are looking for an option that will more specifically target the overall issue, rather than the symptoms, then essential oils might be a great place to start. Try some of the essential oils mentioned above by themselves or in a terpene pen and prepare to reap the benefits.
