Natural Remedies and Addiction Recovery

Natural Remedies and Addiction Recovery

With more than 21 million people currently struggling with addiction in the United States, it is no wonder why some of those people are looking for natural ways to kick the habit, overcome the addiction, and ultimately live much healthier lives.

An addiction to any substance can drastically change a person for the worse while isolating them from the people who love them the most, including their parents, children, and siblings.

Those who choose to seek help are often looking forward to getting into recovery and putting a stop to their bad habits. While detoxing is one of the most essential steps that an addicted individual will need to take, there are several other steps that they must take to stay on the right path for good.

Several natural remedies for addiction recovery do exist. While medication is often offered to those who are recovering from their addiction, it’s important to establish other habits or complements to an established recovery regimen. Some of these options are described below.

Although commonly used for both children and adults with ADHD, cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) can have a positive impact on the minds of those who are in recovery. As a form of psychotherapy, it can potentially help individuals focus on the positive instead of the negative.1

The purpose of this method of therapy is to help individuals learn coping techniques. As a recovering addict, there are times when you might feel tempted to use. However, you have a greater chance of avoiding those harmful substances if you have learned effective ways to cope with those urges while avoiding the temptation.

Treatment is customized for each patient and involves setting a series of goals that may include working on becoming organized, figuring out how to solve problems in a less stressful manner, and planning what to do when you are in a tough or tempting situation.

Meditation is good for your mental, physical, and emotional health. Anyone can benefit from meditating more often, whether they are recovering from addiction or not. However, meditation is ideal for those going through the recovery process because it allows individuals to relax, destress, and focus on getting in touch with their own bodies.

You can become more emotionally stable as you teach yourself how to carefully focus on one single thing instead of allowing a mixture of thoughts to constantly run through your head.

Not only is meditating good for you, but it is also something you can do while using essential oils. If you have a diffuser at home, there are certain types of essential oils that you should add to the diffuser while you are meditating to enhance the overall experience.

Cinnamon essential oil is one option that could make meditating even better for you. It contains antioxidants that can give your immune system a boost while also potentially reducing any aches and pains you may experience.2 It has a long-lasting scent that is naturally enjoyable to breathe in.

Cinnamon is not the only scent you can use when meditating. Some other great options include turmeric, marjoram, and frankincense—all of which are known for giving off a calming scent that will help you relax even more. If you start meditating once in the morning, once in the middle of the day, and once before bed, staying on the right track while improving your mental and emotional health may be completely possible for you.

Aromatherapy to Help With Withdrawal Symptoms

Aside from using essential oils when meditating, you can use aromatherapy, in general, to help reduce withdrawal symptoms. While you are recovering, you may experience several uncomfortable withdrawal symptoms that can leave you feeling like you should give up and use again. However, you must remain strong and do what you can to overcome these symptoms, such as irritability, insomnia, depression, and anxiety.3

Many essential oils can help you overcome withdrawal symptoms in different ways. For example, if you are having cravings for the substances you once used, both grapefruit essential oil and cinnamon essential oil are ideal. Both types of essential oils are known for helping people cut down on the cravings.

If you are experiencing headaches because you have stopped using certain substances, peppermint oil, lavender oil, and eucalyptus oil are worth trying. In fact, the menthol in peppermint oil is known for its ability to naturally provide headache relief to those who are suffering from them.4

There are plenty of simple and effective ways to use aromatherapy to your advantage when you are trying hard to stay on the right path without giving into temptation.

Exercise Routines

Getting into the habit of exercising regularly is something that can keep you busy, help you get in shape, and even make it possible for you to clear your mind. Instead of thinking about the substances you once used, you will think about the different types of activities you can do, such as going for a jog, swimming, bicycling, or even doing yoga.

Because it’s so good for your mind and body, exercise it is yet another natural remedy that you can use to avoid falling back into the vicious cycle of using substances that are bad for you. Consider joining a gym or following a schedule where you are working out on a regular basis on certain days of the week.

Final Thoughts

Fighting addiction is a challenge, but you can recover from your addiction and stay on the right path with natural remedies that are good for your mind and your body. If you are looking for natural remedies for addiction recovery that can act as a complement to an established plan you’ve set up with a healthcare provider, these are some of the best options for you to try.
