Are you thinking about following the liquid diet? The liquid diet is a weight-loss diet that is very popular. It promises quick weight-loss results. The popularity of the diet likely stems from the increasingly busy lifestyles that the average person has. Because of this, it can be difficult to get in the appropriate exercise and even the right mix of nutrients with every meal. A liquid diet promises to help you take in healthy nutrients without needing to prepare and actually cook a full-course meal. While there are plenty of liquid diets available that provide a good amount of nutrition, liquid diets can leave you with significant gaps in your nutrition. Therefore, you are going to need to work to fill in those gaps.
What is a Liquid Diet?
A liquid diet can be limited to only juices, or it can more broadly mean only consuming things in liquid form.1 Depending on what liquid diet you are following, you are going to have specific dietary limitations that must be considered and addressed.2 Liquid diets can effectively help you lose weight as they will inherently put you into a caloric deficit. However, the weight you lose is generally not going to be sustainable due to the nature of your weight loss. Typically, when placed in such a caloric deficiency, your metabolism will slow down to a crawl and place itself into starvation mode to conserve energy.3 If done right, a liquid diet can avoid this happening and thus help you lose weight.
Tips For Supplementing Your Liquid Diet With The Right Nutrients:
If you are going to be following the liquid diet for whatever reason, it is typically going to be beneficial to take a high-quality multivitamin supplement alongside it. Many dietitians are likely to recommend you take some form of a multivitamin along with your liquid diet because a liquid diet can fall short on various vitamins and minerals. Because of this, you will want to fully analyze what you are going to be consumed regularly and figure out whether or not it is going to allow you to hit all of your nutritional quotas. You want to look to see how much of each daily recommended allowance you are getting solely through the liquid diet.
Focus On Getting Enough Calories
While it’s true that you are likely implementing a liquid diet into your routine to lose weight, you do want to focus on getting a sufficient intake of calories in your diet. You want to try to pick and/or design a liquid diet that is not too low in calories which will keep your metabolism from shutting down.
Focus On Getting Extra Protein
With a liquid diet, one of the primary nutrients that you are likely going to be falling short on would be protein. This is why it is so important that you work to get more protein in your diet. This is especially true if you are going to be exercising while implementing a liquid diet. You can easily get more protein in your diet by taking a high-quality protein supplement. Depending on when you are going to be taking the supplement, you can consider taking whey protein or casein protein. Whey protein is digested faster and is typically a better option for pre-workouts and post-workouts. On the other hand, casein protein is a much more slowly-digested protein and can be a great option to take at night for this reason. Protein supplementation is ultimately going to play a critical role in your ability to lose weight and to meet your protein requirements. You are likely going to want to find a protein supplement that offers anywhere from 20 to 30 grams of protein per serving while adhering to a liquid diet.
Take In More Fiber
When you are taking in a liquid diet, another major thing that you are likely going to be limited in would be fiber. Fiber is a type of carbohydrate that the body is unable to digest. Because it cannot be broken down into sugar for the body to utilize as an energy source, it passes through the body completely undigested. Therefore, it can help regulate the body’s intake of sugars and keep overall blood sugar levels stabilized. If you are taking in a liquid diet, it is very likely that you are consuming a lot of sugar. If you aren’t getting fiber alongside the sugar consumption, you might be dealing with elevated blood sugar levels which can cause major problems in the body including inflammation. You should be able to find fiber supplements that you can take that will allow you to remain true to your liquid diet.
Smoothies can be a great addition to any liquid diet. The good thing about smoothies is the ability to really take in whole fruits in liquid form. Instead of juicing the fruit and leaving out all of the fiber, you will be able to take in the fiber along with the fruit. Another good aspect of smoothies is the ability to use all kinds of ingredients to make them. You will even be able to take in a good amount of probiotics with the addition of Greek yogurt in your smoothies. You can use either fresh or frozen fruit for your smoothies. Along with this, you can use leafy greens as a base and make green smoothies. Making yourself smoothies at least once a day is a great way to retain a lot of the nutrition that you would otherwise be missing out on when it comes to adhering to a strictly liquid-based diet. Also, you will be able to use a variety of ingredients which means that you can consistently switch out the smoothies you end up making which leaves you with an endless combination that you can go with daily.
You might also be in need of liquid calcium supplements when you are following this type of diet if you are someone that is lactose intolerant. If you cannot take in any form of milk, you are likely going to need to supplement your diet with liquid calcium supplements because you are not going to be taking in nearly enough calcium to sustain the levels that you should be. While you can get a good amount of calcium through other things like green smoothies with leafy greens, you will likely want to supplement in addition.
Implementing a Liquid Diet
When you are considering yourself implementing this type of diet, you are going to want to discuss the potential implementation of the diet with your doctor. You should figure out whether or not you are a viable candidate for adhering to a liquid diet and whether or not you should make special accommodations when you are following it. By getting proper help, you should have enough information to make your decision. They will also be able to advise you of the risks and some of the different things that you should be aware of when you are following the diet. You also want to be careful to research the various supplements or shakes that you are taking in through your diet as some will be much more healthy than others. You want to look at the first few ingredients to tell whether or not it contains a lot of sugar and/or artificial ingredients prior to choosing it.4
Overall, a liquid diet can be an option for those that are looking to lose weight quickly. With that being said, it is important to understand the causes and limitations of the liquid diets that you will find available. Any liquid diet is going to be deficient in a variety of essential vitamins and minerals which makes it pertinent to supplement with the right nutrients. Because of the intricacies of following a liquid diet, you should be discussing it with your doctor to ensure that you are doing it correctly. Some people might not be suited to following this type of diet for various health reasons. By supplementing with the various nutrients above and implementing the tips, you should be able to get much more effective results with your liquid diet implementation.
