Could a diffuser be an easy low impact way to actually make a major impact when it comes to your overall mood? There are many people who swear up and down over the power of an essential oil diffuser to help you achieve that state of zen. Achieving that state can be all too difficult to find in today’s stress-filled work world.
The good news is that many times, a few small steps can work together to create a massive impact when it comes to your emotional state and even your overall mood. Being able to get a bit of that essential oil aromatherapy from an office diffuser might be just the ticket to calm those anxieties and help you to a better place, even during the most stressful days at the job.
Would This Aromatherapy Work?
Aromatherapy has become a popular treatment for anxiety, stress, and boosting mood. There are several good reasons for that as the benefits go well beyond that of a traditional fragrance to help during quiet time or meditation. There is a long history of positive benefits that have been studied and have often been confirmed in laboratory tests and experiments.1 These benefits include that aromatherapy is great for diffusing stress and getting rid of anxiety. Those benefits alone would make this a great option for workplace relief. Add in the actual benefit of happiness and shifting to a positive mood and it isn’t hard to see why the idea of a diffuser is a pretty good one.

A workplace essential oil diffuser can be a great way to deal with the stress that can come from the workplace. However, you need to make sure that it is actually an option. If you have your own desk or workstation away from others, this could be an option, or if you have your own office, then there shouldn’t be much of a problem since that is your space. Carving out your own little bit of a peaceful area and adding some aromatherapy to your domain could be a great way to help lessen the slide into negative emotions and keep you propped up and in a better general mood. However, you will want to be careful with diffusing oils in an open or shared space as others may be allergic to essential oils or they may cause issues in individuals who struggle with asthma or other upper respiratory issues.
Creative Workplace Options
If you don’t have the option of using a diffuser at work because of a cubicle setup or public area where scents aren’t allowed (or heavily controlled), there are still some potential options. You can have a diffuser working in your car that you can visit on breaks or during lunch. Just because you can’t go for a conventional work setup doesn’t mean that you have to go without your zen place.
Thinking ahead of time about options for breaks, for lunch, or for stepping out for a bit can help you think of creative and acceptable ways you can obey all the rules and still get your little bit of peacetime to help either keep your mood centered or move you towards a happier place depending on where you happen to find yourself during the day.
If you’re self-employed or work from home, consider setting up a relaxation room separate from your office or workspace if that’s feasible. This is a better solution to separate work from home and relaxation than having any amount of help in the office itself. If not, this can still be an effective option to minimize that work-related stress.
What Scents Should You Consider?
There are multiple essential oil scents that you should look at when trying to find the right scent (or blend) for your workplace diffuser. Some scents have a reputation for reducing stress directly. Others have a reputation for being particularly good at helping eliminate symptoms of anxiety. Knowing which are which can help to create the perfect blend based on your specific tastes, as well as creating a smell that helps soothe the root cause of your stress levels.
Consider the short list that was published in an online article for Entrepreneur magazine about essential oils if you need a little bit of persuasion to let the boss give this a shot.2 This article won’t reveal anything earth-shattering to anyone who has kept track of the benefits of essential oils, but it offers a great short list of relaxing oils that can help reduce worry and stress while also increasing focus and productivity.
That article mentions:
Think about what these scents have in common and look for those traits if/when you consider other options as well. As a general rule of thumb when you think fresh, crisp, or refreshing, you’re on the right track.
Everyone understands that work can be stressful. In fact, the far majority of people are unsatisfied with their jobs which gives every indication that for more people than not, jobs are a source of stress. This can lead to worse moods that are hard to shake, which is why everyone in that position is looking for anything that can help them feel better and lessen that load.
The ability of aromatherapy to really shift mood is undisputed when helping mood or treating negative emotions.3 Smell is a powerful sense and when you move past general emotions to really dive deep into moods, aromatherapy can affect every other area of your personal health as well.
The stresses that come with work are affecting more and more people every single day, and the problem isn’t going to get better by itself. Being able to use all the aromatherapy tools at your disposal to help wash away the stress and bring in a stable and happier mood is a great way to live your best life.
