Why Meditation Is a Great Addition to Your Daily Schedule

meditation and daily schedule

It’s easy to be impressed with the benefits that can come from the practices of meditation and mindfulness. It only takes a few dedicated practices to become presented with an aspect of your mental function you may have been unfamiliar with. This leads many practitioners down their path of cultivating mindfulness through meditation and provides some important initial benefits.

However, the practice is filled by pitfalls that can discourage individuals from partaking in the practice. There are distractions to the mind, variation in motivation levels from one day to the next, and sometimes the performance indicators are not satisfying to expectations.

Perhaps the greatest obstacle that beginner practitioners at some point is the idea that maybe sitting down cultivating mindfulness is kind of a waste of time. At some point, anyone observing the mind will stop and wonder if their limited time could be better spent making progress in beating down other greater demands of the day.

Modern culture is built on the idea of rewarding the busy and keeping everyone in sync through real-time communications and constant accessibility in every aspect of life. Detaching the mind from this from a moment can be daunting because it may create a fear of falling behind.

With so much demanded from the mind and daily schedule today, how can it be feasible, let alone possible, to set aside time for participating in a 5,000-year-old exercise?

No one answered this question better than the world-famous German reformer Martin Luther, who not only challenged the divinity of the Roman Catholic Church but was himself a dedicated practitioner of meditation who wrote extensively on the subject.

One day, when faced with an especially large workload and serious time constraints, it was suggested to Martin Luther that he slash his precious hour of meditation time in half and get a head start on the day. “On the contrary,” he replied, “Because I have so much to accomplish, I must spend two hours in meditation.”

This anecdote captures the reverse-logic that makes meditation and the pursuit of mindfulness the ultimate game-changer. As the wild card in your day, meditation provides benefits that allow for resilience to mental obstacles, fluidity in processing information, and resourcefulness when producing solutions to problems.

The important takeaway is that meditation is far from a burden to your daily schedule, but rather can keep the mind running smoothly and effectively for the rest of your endeavors.

Still uncertain that adding meditation into your daily schedule is the best start or end to a day filled important meetings, concerns, and demands? Highlighted below is an explanation of how meditation will allow you to accomplish more with less.

Top Reasons to Double Meditation Time on Demanding Days

Increased Creativity

Life presents impossibilities, obstacles, and time-wasters in all shapes and sizes. However, creativity is the art of getting past all this by thinking outside of the box. Meditation allows for an objective view of the mind and its function. This objectivity can be applied to a wide range of daily issues, promoting the necessary problem-solving skills that lead to resolutions.1

Improved Ability to Multitask

Multitasking literally splits the mind into two and demands that the attention switch back and forth between functions quickly. This can be strenuous and lead to inevitable human error and time lost retracing your steps to identify the source of these errors.

If only there some special practice that could allow for smoother multitasking. It would also be great if this practice provided the necessary rest and recovery for minds to multitasking on a daily basis. Mindfulness is the answer to both needs, and according to studies, improves mental recollection of details pertaining to the tasks accomplished in multitasking.2

Reduced Pain

Pains even on the smallest level such as fatigue from maintaining a seated or standing position for hours on end can reduce the efficacy of your efforts. Meditation allows for greater control of pain and discomfort. In fact, research has shown how meditation can cause the pain-regulating portions of the brain to become less sensitive, allowing for better focus and work momentum.3

Improved Retention of Information

So much of professional effort deals with the capacity to process information and apply stored memory to producing needed solutions in a variety of capacities. When this mental function is running smoothly, the efforts are met with satisfactory or exemplary results.

When this process is interrupted by stress, trivial worries, important future concerns, inner criticisms, the outcome of effort spent is not as satisfactory. Considering this in the long term, taking the time to keep the mind healthy through mindfulness and meditation could be the most important maintenance for your professional or academic career.4

Reduced Mental Fatigue

As the hours get longer and mental fatigue adds its weight to your tasks, will you have the endurance to carry on with precision and maintain your top-quality performance? Meditation has been scientifically studied to increase mental endurance and reduce work-related exhaustion.5

Better-controlled Eating Habits

When a single aspect of life is out of balance, its effects extend everywhere. Fine-tuning dietary intake for health and energy efficiency is not as easy a task as we’d expect. Even with all the food options available, there is a learning curve to balancing the diet, which can lead to periods of low energy and mental lethargy.

Meditation has been found effective in balancing helping with this by reducing cravings and hunger pangs.6

Improved Sexual Performance

Sexual energy is one of the most primordial forces in the body and must be regulated properly. Meditation and the practice of mindfulness have many implications for improving sexual performance in both men and women. Most importantly, it allows for a more satisfying connection.

Additionally, a study showed that meditation enhances arousal in women and leads to greater satisfaction during their sexual activities.7

Decreased Aggression

Some individuals are difficult to deal with, traffic is a drag, and sometimes your coffee is cold. Don’t forget, though, that letting your blood boil is not only bad for your health but counterproductive to any daily efforts.

Mindfulness is a great way to reduce your temper and move on from the many annoyances of day-to-day life. This allows for greater focus where it matters most.8

A Better Tomorrow

No matter how hard you push and how furious your effort, you must consider tomorrow’s demands as well. Mindfulness allows the mind to rest and close the previous day before the events of a new day begin. When practiced before going to bed, even 20 minutes of mindfulness is enough to improve sleeping cycles, and better sleep at tonight allows for a better performance tomorrow. So yes, meditation takes time, but in the long-turn, this is time spent enhancing the rest of your day and life, making it a great addition to your daily routine.
