Try These 7 Relaxing Indoor Winter Activities

Winter is a time for cold temperatures, bare trees, and snowfall. During the holidays it gets pretty busy and they are often a source of stress. But what about all the other days when indoor heat is the norm? When we’re stuck inside during the colder months, we may dream about the time when warm weather will reappear.

But winter is also the time to get cozy indoors and do things that are not only fun but relaxing. Try these relaxing indoor winter activities for those times when it’s too cold to even think about stepping outside your house.

The winter time seems like the perfect time to indulge in comfort food, something warm, sweet and yummy to put in the oven that will make us feel good when we eat it.  Not only is it fun to follow a recipe, for example, and create the image that you see on the recipe’s page, but baking can be a natural way to relax and reduce anxiety.

As reported at the Mass Public Health Blog, baking nurtures our creative side which can also be relaxing since you’re working with your hands. Furthermore, while you’re busy mixing and stirring and measuring, you’re not thinking about your troubles. You find yourself lost in the art of creation and in anticipation of what you the result will be. Once your homemade treats are in the oven, and you can smell it coming to fruition, thoughts of safety and comfort come to mind as the aroma fills your living space.1

Are you sleep deprived?  When was the last time you took a nap?  According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), one in three adults do not get enough sleep.  What happens when you don’t get enough sleep on a persistent basis? You run the risk of serious conditions such as obesity, heart disease, high blood pressure, stroke, acute depression, and more.2 However, taking a nap can help you refresh your body and get the sleep that you need, and taking a nap in your warm indoor environment is a perfect thing to do during the winter months.  

You could also combine your nap with aromatherapy to help you get to sleep naturally, especially if falling asleep has been a problem for you due to stress, for example. An ideal essential oil for inducing sleep is lavender, which is one of the main ingredients in our MONQ Sleepy blend. It has a pleasant aroma for the bedroom, and it can help calm nerves and reduce stress. The winter time is an ideal, cozy time to nap.  Find a quiet, dark place to do it, but keep in mind that you should strive to nap for only 10 to 30 minutes.  If you nap longer than that, you may feel groggy for the rest of the day. Also, try to nap in the midafternoon when a lower level of alertness is usually present.4

The winter time is the perfect time to snuggle up on your sofa, with your favorite blanket, and a bowl of popcorn to watch a movie. Today’s TVs are nothing like they used to be, which means you can get a superior movie-watching experience right in your own home, whenever you want.  So stream or download a movie in your most comfortable clothing and relax with your favorite genre while escaping the cold.

Sit By a Fire

When is the best time to get that fireplace going?  During the colder months, of course. While it’s snowing outside, if you have a fireplace, you can get it going while you cozy up and watch the flames.  As reported at the University of Alabama, watching campfires and hearths can lower your blood pressure. In fact, fire’s influence may have even played an important role in human evolution.5 You can “camp out” in front of your fireplace and make it an enjoyable occasion.  Prop up some large pillows to lean against, cover yourself with a cozy throw blanket and watch the fire or enjoy its heat while reading a book under a table light.

Are you a busy adult?  Do you jump in the shower rather than take the time to fill up a bathtub?  Chances are the answers to those two questions are “yes.” So while you’re inside watching the snow fall, why not take the opportunity to relax in a warm bath?  You can turn your bath time into a spa experience with candles and soft music. Put a few drops of essential oil in your bath, such as Frankincense essential oil. This is an oil that comes from the Boswellia tree, and it is well-known for reducing anxiety and creating a sense of relaxation. It can be found in our Zen blend along with ylang-ylang and orange essential oils and you’re able to breathe them from a personal aromatherapy diffuser while you sit in the tub. Place a bath pillow behind your head, close your eyes and take the opportunity to calm your mind and soothe your spirit.

Give Yourself a Spa Day

Use the winter months as an excuse to pamper yourself, because chances are you’re not getting enough pampering in your busy life.  Wear a warm, pretty robe with matching slippers for your pampering event. Start with a DIY hair treatment, such as a mixture of avocado, honey, and olive oil. Put the mixture on your hair and cover your hair with a plastic, disposable shower cap.6 Leave the mixture on for a half hour and then rinse it off. While your hair is being treated, treat your face, as well. Try a DIY mask of a mixture of avocado, plain yogurt, and honey or a homemade scrub of brown sugar and coconut oil.7 Then have all the items you’ll need to give yourself a manicure and a pedicure, things such as nail polish, nail polish remover, nail clippers, toenail clippers, emery board, cuticle nail pusher, orangewood stick, cotton balls, and more. Don’t schedule anything other than pampering for your spa day. Give yourself all the time you need without the stress. Afterward, you’ll not only feel refreshed, but you’ll feel beautiful.

Take an Online Class

Taking an online class is anything but stressful when it’s quick and fun.  In today’s times, there is a wide assortment of fast online courses that you can take in every subject imaginable.  Some classes cost a small fee, while others are entirely free. While it’s cold outside, take out your laptop and spend an hour or two learning something new.   Take an hour-long class on tips for achieving happiness, learn how to manage your time in a 30-minute class, or take a two-hour class on food preparation. The wide variety of subjects to learn at online classes seem endless.  

The winter time may seem cold and dreary, but it’s also a time where you can get cozy in your home and relax.  Whether it’s watching a movie, baking, giving yourself a spa day, or just taking that much-needed nap, relaxing indoor winter activities can be beneficial to do alone or with family and friends.
