The key to becoming a self-motivator lies in making motivation a habit. Motivation may seem like more work—one more thing to change, one more job to do. However, learning to become a motivator and staying FOCUSed will help you not just in wellness but in every area of life.
If you haven’t yet written down your goals, get out paper and a writing tool or create a new word file. It’s time. Why? Everyone has some experience with motivation. You might have been motivated towards new wellness goals by reading a book or doing a workshop. Back then, your mind was filled with visions of a healthier, happier future.
Then what happens? Too often, individuals take the book or the notes from a workshop and stick them in a drawer. Then, they march down the path to a new, changed life alone—with no support system.
So, if you haven’t already done so, take some time now and write down your new wellness goals. Wellness in work, at home, in regards to food and exercise, stress management, and joy.
See, motivation isn’t a task to be completed. It’s is a new way of life. Motivation is truly effective when it becomes part of your daily routine. Like your morning cup of coffee or tea, motivation is part of beginning every good day. Whatever notes you wrote belong on your desk, on the breakfast table, or taped to the bathroom mirror. Motivation needs repetition to stay at the front of your mind. Whatever motivates you should become a sort of mantra for you, and it’s important to think about your motivators daily.
Step 1: Morning Motivators
You may be a morning person or you may not be. Your mornings may feel rushed and hectic or you might start your day with a bit of quiet time for reflection. However you start the day, it’s important to make a bit of time for you and your new wellness plan.1

Reviewing your motivators in the morning helps set the tone for a day. You deserve to spend a few minutes devoted to your new wellness plan and the rewards that will come with it. True, you may not feel all inspired to do this first thing in the morning. However, the hope and enthusiasm that filled you when you wrote out those new goals will be rekindled as you reread your plan.
One of the gifts of writing down your thoughts is that you are actually recording the spirit with which they were written. That is a form of energy that doesn’t fade away. That energy sits there on the written page waiting for you to give it new life by rereading it. So, do that.
This morning motivation idea doesn’t have to take a lot of time. Additionally, it doesn’t have to happen first thing in the morning if that doesn’t work with your lifestyle. But it needs to happen. Here are some ideas that might help you find the time to motivate yourself every day:
- Write your self-motivating ideas on a sheet of paper and tape it somewhere you will be spending a few minutes every morning.
- Record your motivators and play the recording during your morning commute.
- If you read the newspaper or listen to the news, make reading your motivators the first thing you read or listen to—then back to your normal routine.
- Keep the motivating statements at work and take a few minutes before you start your day to review them.
Step 2: Your Mantra
A mantra is a shorter version of your goals for wellness. Your mantra might fit on an index card or on a piece of paper folded up in your wallet. It might be short enough to commit to memory.
The mantra is there to help you when the pressure is on. When something throws you off your new wellness plan, your mantra is your 9-1-1 call to your higher self. There’s no time to read your journal when temptation towards old behaviors arises. You’ve only got yourself, your inner wisdom, and your mantra.2
What to write? Well, think about your goal and the changes that you are making in your life to increase your overall wellness. Think about how you can encourage yourself when times are tough. Read through your goals and see which words might calm and reassure you. Start with those words.
Step 3: Self Talk
Every day, every individual has an onboard coach and cheerleader every moment of the day. During challenging times, there is that voice in your head that can calm you down and encourage you towards your goals. That is what goes on in your head, right?
In today’s world, people can be very critical of others and especially critical of themselves. So, what does self-talk have to do with wellness? It’s all about that motivation that you need. The only person who is with you throughout every step of the change process is you.3
You can greatly improve your wellness plan by learning to encourage yourself like you would encourage a dear friend. You can regularly remind yourself of your goals. You can boost your spirits by speaking kindly to yourself, reminding yourself of your positive attributes and your strengths. This is the kind of self-talk that makes change happen.
Step 4: Motivating Tools
Each individual is inspired by different things. Here’s a look at a few additional tools you can use to keep your mind, body, and spirit on track to wellness.
Music seems a good place to start. It can give your mind a place to focus when thoughts are scattered. It can also pick you up or calm you down. Consider making a playlist on your phone that can give you a lift when needed.
Your sense of smell is another powerful motivating tool. Aromatherapy uses essential oils to encourage changes in the body and mind. Essential oils carry all the power of living plants and can be used to support mood and change your body in amazing, healthy ways. Consider an essential oil blend that encourages you to be Active, one that boosts your Happy energy, and even one that helps you Focus to help you attain your new wellness goals.
Other ideas you might consider include finding a support group or coach, reading or watching documentaries, or practicing meditation.
You’re now officially your own motivator. Okay, it’s a process, but by cultivating some basic skills, you can encourage yourself to work towards a life with enhanced wellness. No one else can do this for you. Most successful, happy fulfilled people have learned how to encourage themselves. Developing this skill in itself is an important part of living your wellness goals and being the sort of example that others might need to work towards theirs. You can do this.
