Introducing the Men in Your Life to Aromatherapy

Introducing the Men in Your Life to Aromatherapy

It might seem that essential oils are too female-centric for many men, but if your guy wears cologne, essentials shouldn’t be too much of a stretch.

For me, it wasn’t that difficult to bring essential oils into my husband’s life.

It helps, perhaps, that he grew up in North Carolina, where sweet kudzu and honeysuckle give the spring and summer air a sweet aroma that almost makes the heat bearable. Essential oils bring the outdoors in, and that was what made him an easy, instant fan.

It didn’t hurt, I don’t suppose, that I was making homemade soaps when we met, and he immediately associated the aroma of essential oils with me. From then on, the scent of an essential oil instantly sparked feelings of love and well-being. Who wouldn’t be a fan of that?

The most effective vehicle for him has been and remains a diffuser, which fills our living room with subtle aromas.

We use a blend of lavender and chamomile, because calm is essential in our hectic, two-dog home, and the scents are soothing to both us and our fur babies.

(Making sure we were using oils that were safe for our pets was one of the first considerations we had when choosing the essential oils we use in our room diffuser. Check out this post for more details about which essentials are pet-friendly and which ones should be banished from homes that share air space with pets. MONQ personal aromatherapy diffusers also offer a safe alternative for homes with pets.)

The thing about MONQ is that the blends are created with men in mind. The company was founded by Dr. Eric Fishman, who determined that the healing powers of essential oils should be more accessible to everyone, so it should be no surprise that blends like FOCUS feature interesting essentials such as black pepper, copaiba, and thyme, which mix spicy and herbal notes.

All blends from MONQ are unisex, but some offer benefits that all men can get behind, including relaxation, pain relief and boosts of energy.

Relieve. The first MONQ personal essential oil diffuser I introduced to my husband was Relieve, in an effort to help him address chronic pain. Relieve includes both lavender and chamomile, two oils that have been shown in studies to help relieve both pain and inflammation.

According to wellness specialist Brenda Powell, in an interview with the Cleveland Clinic, while the aromas in essential oils may be nice, the benefits aren’t so simple as scent alone.1

Rather, the terpenes in plants – the compounds that give plants their aromas – are absorbed through the nose to interact with the limbic system of the brain, where they influence mood, energy levels, and pain.

Pain relief is an especially powerful aromatherapy benefit, and lavender and chamomile both offer terpenes that help ease pain including muscle and joint pain, migraine pain, and low back pain.

Chamomile is an effective anti-inflammatory that has been used to ease pain including stress-related discomfort. A 2018 study appearing in the Italian journal Neurological Sciences found that chamomile helped relieve migraine pain when applied topically as a gel.2

Previous research, including a 2010 study from researchers in Ohio and India that appeared in the journal Molecular Medicine Report, explored the volatile oils in chamomile that provide the most relief, including alpha-bisabolol and chamazulene.3

Chamomile teams up beautifully with lavender, which is also an effective pain reliever, as it provides both anti-inflammatory and analgesic benefits, according to 2015 research from Brazil.4

Other MONQ blends that are great for men include:

FOCUS. This new patent-pending blend uses scientific principles and essential oils to help the brain reach the state of flow, which helps make work more effective.

FOCUS includes a mix of essentials such as bergamot and red grapefruit, two citrus oils that helps break through brain fog, as well as peppermint and spearmint, which elevate levels of oxygen to the brain.

Citrus oils help boost energy, mood, and mental alertness, making them exceptionally versatile essentials. When mixed with citrus, juniper berry – best known for giving gin its herbaceous notes – does the same.5

Based on research from 2006 that appeared in the International Journal of Neuroscience, peppermint essential oil has been shown to boost mental alertness, wiping away exhaustion naturally. That brain boost can be used to power through final exams, conquer a hectic morning after an all-nighter on daddy duty, or extend even hardcore exercise sessions.6

Happy. Happy is a bright, herb-infused blend—think the licorice notes of fennel alongside lavender, thyme, vanilla, and caraway—that helps boost mood through exposure to several powerful compounds, most importantly myrcene and linalool, which interact with neurotransmitters in the brain including serotonin and dopamine to promote feelings of well-being.

Eucalyptus helps to ease muscle tension, making it a natural for use in the Ocean blend.

Lime helps ease stress thanks to high levels of the terpene alpha-pinene, which has been shown in studies to be as effective as drugs in the benzodiazepine class at relieving stress, without the sedating side effects that come with Xanax or Valium.

Forest. If the man in your life loves long hikes through the woods, it would not be a stretch to introduce him to forest bathing, a Japanese practice that takes advantage of forest terpenes to ease stress and improve mood.7

This relaxing blend of Black spruce, sandalwood, Douglas fir, cedarwood, lemon balm, rosemary, Scotch pine, and wild orange is earthy, woodsy and bold, ideal for easing away stress if you can’t find time to walk among the trees.

Mountain. For anyone who has ever dreamed of summiting Mount Everest but can’t slip away from the office long enough to properly train for climbing under low-oxygen conditions, Mountain’s innovative blend of evergreen, mint, herbs, and citrus is the next best thing.

This blend includes oils that help ease stress, boost mental clarity, and elevate mood, making it an excellent choice for any outdoor enthusiast.
