Siam Wood Essential Oil – Part Fountain of Youth, Part Love Potion

Siam Wood

Steam distilled from a tree native to southeastern China, Laos, and Vietnam, siam wood essential oil isn’t used as often in aromatherapy as some of the more popular essential oils.

Used throughout history as a natural remedy, not only to physical wounds, but also for mental pain, anguish, and confusion, there were often mystical properties associated with siam wood. The ancient people of southeastern China prized siam wood oil for its healing properties, but also used it in celebrations as a means to help open the mind to fully experience the event. In Laos and Vietnam, individuals harvested the trees while respecting their place in nature, making the most of the essential oil they were able to boil out of the wood they harvested. In Vietnam, this essential oil was also considered to be the key to eternal life.

Today, siam wood is primarily used in the world of holistic medicine world for its anti-aging, pain alleviating, and stress relieving properties. The combination of its anti-inflammatory and sedative properties allow for its effectiveness against anxiety, stress, and pressure. Believe it or not, siam wood essential oil is also one of nature’s most powerful aphrodisiacs.

Though perhaps not popular in the aromatherapy world a few decades ago, more people are beginning to realize the power, potency, and health benefits of siam wood essential oil each day.

The History of Siam Wood

Harvested from the Fokienia hodginsii—Fujian cypress—tree, a conifer tree in the cypress family, it is the only member of its genus.1

The tree’s slow growth makes it difficult to use as frequently and widely as faster-growing trees, though this tree has been popular and beloved in the world of construction because of its strength to weight ratio and resistance to rotting.

In southeastern China, Laos, and Vietnam, the Fujian cypress tree was used primarily to build doors, windows frames, and furniture that was both functional and ornamental. Relatively easy to work with, it became increasingly popular for such projects, inevitably leading to over logging and the endangerment of the species.

Our ancestors boiled the lumber of the tree to help bend and shape it, discovering that the distilled liquid left behind during the steam bending process had a beautifully strong and inviting scent. This is when the healing properties of the tree were uncovered, leading to an explosion in the popularity of siam wood essential oil and additional harvesting of this raw material.2

Today, the Fujian cypress is protected in several areas throughout China, Laos, and Vietnam. This has limited the production of siam wood essential oil significantly, making its use more rare in the world of aromatherapy, though when used, it provides a range of health benefits.

Terpene Properties

Siam wood essential oil is made up of a diverse collection of biochemicals that allow it to deliver significant health benefits to the human body. The terpenes, sesquiterpenes, and other main constituents in siam wood essential oil are powerful biochemical agents, making siam wood essential oil quite potent. Essential oils with high levels of sesquiterpenes are known for acting as anti-inflammatories, as well as being grounding and soothing for the body overall.3 Four major biochemicals provide the bulk of health benefits and regenerative properties in siam wood essential oil:

  • E-Nerolidol
  • Fokienol
  • Dauca-8
  • 11-Dien-9-ol 4

These particular biochemicals are found in significantly high amounts in siam wood essential oil, ranging from between 15 percent and 25 percent depending on the exact distillation process as well as the quality of the raw siam wood. The reason levels of these particular biochemicals are so high is because siam wood essential oil is steam distilled from the trunk and the roots of the Fujian cypress tree where the majority of the nutrients that feed the tree are concentrated.5

Each of these biochemical agents has anti-inflammatory, soothing, and regenerative properties that help quiet the mind as well as the body.

Uses for Siam Wood Essential Oil

Among a range of benefits, siam wood essential oil has proven effective for its anti-aging and antiseptic properties. The antiseptic properties of this essential oil kill off bacteria, prevent infection, and help with immune system support across the board.6

In aromatherapy, siam wood essential oil is used to relieve adrenal fatigue, elevate testosterone levels, and relieve anxiety, while strengthening the mind to better combat the stress and pressure on a day to day basis. Below, we highlight some of the key benefits that siam wood essential oil offers.

Fortifies the Mind

We live in the middle of the most hectic, fast-paced, and ever-changing environment in human history. Additionally, technology has completely rewritten almost every aspect of our day to day life. On top of that, new technological breakthroughs happen almost every day, all, in addition, to constantly changing climates, environments, political systems, and economies.

It’s a lot to process for anyone, but combined with the normal stress and pressures that humans have to contend with—and have been contending with throughout human history—it’s enough to put people in a tight spot mentally and emotionally.

Siam wood essential oil, when used with the help of a diffuser, works to quiet the mind by releasing a handful of biochemicals—including endorphins—that elevate mood, relieve stress, and help fortify and protect the mind and emotions in the present and future.

Fights Inflammation

Many individuals face inflammation because it affects the human body so indiscriminately and can be caused by a range of factors. The environment, diet, exercise, or even emotions can trigger inflammation throughout the body.7

Siam wood essential oil contains powerful anti-inflammatory agents that work to find inflammation in the body and relieve it, this can be done topically when massaged into the affected areas with a carrier oil or through a personal essential oil diffuser. This provides almost immediate relief, helping calm inflammation in the muscles, tendons, or joints, especially around critical organs.

Acts as an Aphrodisiac

One of the greatest benefits of siam wood essential is its ability to alleviate adrenal fatigue, fight back against impotence, and elevate low testosterone levels.

Testosterone is hormone responsible for the development of male secondary sex characteristics, as well as driving competition, passion, anger, aggression, and sex drive. Low testosterone levels have also been linked to impotence. Increasing testosterone levels and alleviating adrenal fatigue through the use of siam wood essential oil may help correct for this.

Safety and Precautions

Like most other essential oils, it is important to be careful when using siam wood, particularly because of its potency in its undiluted form. It is also important never to ingest siam wood essential oil, rather it should be used to be vaporized or diffused in aromatherapy or applied topically. When used topically, Siam wood should be diluted with another essential oil or diluted with a “carrier oil/cream”. This is a neutral base that brings down the overall potency of the essential oil while still allowing it to deliver its payload of benefits at the exact same time.8

Women who are pregnant women or nursing are discouraged from using siam wood essential oil in any form, as with any other essential oil. Infants and children under the age of 12 are also discouraged from using this essential oil.

If used in excess, potential side effects include skin irritation, mental fogginess or dizziness, and hot flashes. Before using siam wood essential oil topically, be sure to do a skin patch test before applying the oil to larger areas of the body.

Final Thoughts

Whether you are looking for something that can help you overcome the stress and pressure of modern day life or something that can help you look and feel better, siam wood essential oil is a great fit.

Prized for hundreds of years due to its health benefits, siam wood essential oil can bring these same benefits as part of your routine today, both in its topical application or when used in a room or personal essential oil diffuser like Love MONQ.
