Top 5 Essential Oils for the Holiday Season

Top 5 essential oils for the holiday season

The existence of essential oils can be traced back at least a thousand years and can be seen in the ancient Greek, Egyptian, Indian and Chinese cultures. An essential oil is a pure substance that comes directly from a plant or herb. Over many years, they have been used for a variety of medicinal purposes such as aiding digestion, easing depression, improving sleep, relieving headaches, fighting colds and bacteria, and more. Essential oils are also beneficial when a few drops are poured into the bath or when mixed with a carrier oil and applied to the skin. Many essential oils are potent on their own, such as nutmeg oil.  Always dilute these oils before use.1

There are several essential oils that are not only beneficial for the body but are also perfect for the holiday season. Examples of these include cloves, cacao, nutmeg, orange, and peppermint.

clove buds and a bottle of essential oil

Clove Essential Oil

Clove essential oil comes from a plant originally found in India, and there are many medicinal uses for the oil.  Place a drop of the oil on a painful toothache to naturally ease the pain. Add it to a carrier oil, such as coconut oil, and spread it on your skin to alleviate dryness.  If you have bunions or warts, you can soak a rag of clove oil and apply it to the affected area to relieve the pain. Enjoy an aromatherapy experience with clove oil by place it in a diffuser and breathing in the scent which helps to stimulate the brain.2

cacao essential oil

Cacao Essential Oil

Cacao essential oil is the equivalent of chocolate decadence but in essential oil form.  Cacao is derived from the cacao plant and is native to South and Central America. Mix drops of cacao oil with an alcohol to create a natural perfume. Mix it with a carrier oil, such as coconut oil, and use it as a massage oil to leave the body feeling refreshed. Also, it’s great to rub on the skin to improve wrinkles and smooth the appearance of cracked feet. Cacao essential oil, much like chocolate itself, is an aphrodisiac.  Enjoy it during aromatherapy with an essential oil diffuser to increase your libido and to make you feel sexy and good.3

nutmeg essential oil

Nutmeg Essential Oil

Nutmeg oil comes from a tropical evergreen tree found in Indonesia. It has therapeutic properties that benefit us in many ways. Furthermore, it contains what is known as phytochemicals that are optimal for our health.  In ancient times, the oil was used to treat fever, headaches, digestive problems and more. Today, we know nutmeg oil has additional benefits such as a natural way to eliminate bad breath. Just place a few drops in water as a gargle. Mix nutmeg oil with a carrier oil, such as olive oil or coconut oil, and massage it into the skin to relieve muscle aches, reduce swelling and promote circulation. Rub a few drops of nutmeg oil on your pillow or take it in with a diffuser, and it becomes a powerful sleeping aid to reduce insomnia and help you sleep through the night.4

orange essential oil

Orange Essential Oil

Orange essential oil, derived from the peels of oranges by cold compression, has many medicinal purposes that benefit us.  Spread a few drops of the oil on your pillow or breathe it in to help you fight insomnia and get a good night’s sleep. Or breathe in the oil to relieve depression and anxiety to elevate your mood. Relieve inflammation and pain on the skin by mixing the oil with a carrier oil, such as coconut oil, and applying it to the skin.

peppermint essential oil

Peppermint Essential Oil

Peppermint essential oil is one of the most versatile and helpful.  This one is a hybrid oil derived from the peppermint plant, a cross between spearmint and water mint and coming from Europe and North America.  Peppermint oil aids in the relief of headaches, an upset stomach, and the pain associated with a sore throat. Put a few drops in a hot bath, along with some Epsom salt, and enjoy a natural way to relieve muscle pain. Add a few drops of peppermint oil to an essential oil diffuser and breathe in the scent to help with waking up in the morning. The oil is excellent for your hair, too. Put a few drops with a carrier oil, such as olive oil, and rub it into your hair and scalp.  It will naturally thicken and nourish your hair.5
