No More Toxic Cleaners: Use Essential Oils and Other Natural Ingredients

toxic cleaners

Whether you own or rent your home, keeping it clean is one of your responsibilities. Fortunately, that doesn’t mean that you have to constantly expose yourself to toxic chemical cleaners. Learning to use essential oils to mix into all-natural cleansers will leave your place just as clean, as well as looking and smelling fantastic.

Each ingredient in a homemade cleaning solution serves one of three purposes: disinfect, deodorize, or remove grime. When you are finished, your home will be free from germs, have a fresh scent, and an aesthetically pleasing appearance.

Before making any cleaners, you will need to collect the necessary ingredients, which can be stored together until it is time to use them. Make sure to properly label any mixtures you make in order to remember its intended use.

Homemade cleaning solutions call for one or more ingredients from the following basic list. While no solution uses all of them, the following ingredients are key.

  •  Essential Oils – The essential oils you choose to depend on your goals. Are you looking to kill germs or deodorize? The best oils for each of these will be covered later, but for now, remember they are a valuable part of your home cleaning kit.
  •  Baking Soda – Baking soda is one of the most important ingredients to have on hand. It works well for eliminating odors and breaking up grime. Large boxes can often be found in the laundry detergent section of a grocery store.
  •  White Vinegar – Just like baking soda, think big when shopping for white vinegar. A gallon jug provides a lot of cleaning power, but double check that the vinegar purchased is safe for cleaning your surfaces. Also, do not confuse white vinegar with apple cider vinegar, which is good for cleansing your body, but not your floors.
  •  Borax – This naturally-occurring mineral can boost the effectiveness of your other cleansers. It can also be effective on its own for breaking up grease, cleaning toilets, and tackling hard stains.
  •  Castile Soap – Liquid or solid, this soap is inexpensive and incredibly effective.
  •  Dish Soap – Dish soap has different properties than castile soap and is usually preferred. Look for an environmentally-friendly brand to keep your efforts on track.
  •  Rubbing Alcohol – Rubbing alcohol should be at least 91 percent isopropyl alcohol.
  •  Lemon Juice – The citric acid can be effective for breaking up grease and killing germs.

Note: Never allow castile soap and white vinegar to mix as they will form a slime that is difficult to remove.

Spray bottles are important items to have for mixing these solutions. Glass cleaners and all-purpose sprays can be made in large bottles.

Additionally, make sure to always wear gloves when cleaning with these solutions. Though the ingredients are natural, you should still avoid exposing your skin to them for prolonged periods of time.

Essential Oils in Cleaning Productscleaner

  • Lavender – This relaxing floral fragrance is great for disinfecting and deodorizing.
  • Lemon – A “must-have” for keeping your home fresh and clean. It naturally fights against a variety of microbes, including viruses and is for breaking up grease and grime while leaving the home smelling fresh.
  • Tea Tree – This oil can ward off microbes and bugs. Consider buying a larger container of this than the other oils because it will probably be more frequently used.
  • Wild Orange – A popular citrus fragrance, this oil is great for kitchen cleansers due to its power to remove grease or glue.
  • Lime – This provides a fragrant oil that will leave your home smelling fresh and clean. It fights against germs and combines well with other oils.
  • Clove – Though better-known for its culinary use, clove essential oil can help you to kill germs.
  • Peppermint – This refreshing oil will perk up the atmosphere in any room. In addition, it can be used to keep certain small spiders and insects at bay.
  • Lemongrass – Lemongrass helps kill germs and other microbes.
  • Eucalyptus – Useful as a germicide and pesticide, eucalyptus oil can also be used as an air freshener.
  • Thyme – Excellent choice for fighting off germs that combine well with several other oils on this list.
  • Pine – Long before home cleaning products hit store shelves, pine was being used to keep homes clean. This essential oil has an outdoorsy scent and can kill mold and mildew.
  • Rosemary – Great for maintaining focus, rosemary essential oil also works well to kill bacteria and freshen the air.

The following combinations have been proven effective in home cleaning solutions:

Of course, these ideas are just the beginning. As you begin to learn about the qualities of your essential oils, it will become easier to make adjustments as you see fit. You can find lavender and thyme in MONQ’s Happy personal essential oil diffuser.

For a soft scrub that can be used in the kitchen and bathroom, mix baking soda and water until smooth. Then add thirty drops of oil per four ounces of cleanser. A combination of tea tree and wild orange essential oils can be quite effective for cleaning tough stove top grime.

To clean floors, put a gallon of warm water into a mop bucket. Then add a couple of tablespoons of unscented castile soap followed by 15–30 drops of essential oil.

An all-purpose cleaner can be made by mixing one part vinegar with seven parts water. Add five drops of essential oil per ounce of liquid.

How to Succeed with Natural Cleaners

The key to success in using at-home cleaners is using high-quality ingredients in the right ways.

Store your ingredients in a safe place, preferably away from heat and light. Baking soda, borax, and other powders will begin to clump if left open in humid environments.

You don’t have to rely on store-bought cleaning agents for a fresh, clean home. Switching to homemade cleaners made with essential oils will give you greater control over the ingredients that go into the cleaners and the purpose they’re meant to serve. Overall, they make for an effective, affordable, and environmentally-friendly addition to your routine.
