Exploring CBD Properties: Health Benefits & FAQ

Exploring CBD Properties_ Health Benefits & FAQ

Cannabidiol, or CBD, is a compound found in cannabis, which is derived from the hemp plant. The Cannabacae family of flowering plants, which cannabis is a member of, has been historically valued for its ability to improve health, as well as serve other important needs, like providing textiles, paper, and adequate nutrition. Recently, researchers have linked CBD properties to a range of health benefits.

However, something that worries individuals who hear cannabis’ history as an illicit crop is that CBD may lead to similar effects as tetrahydrocannabinol, or THC, the psychoactive compound in cannabis that creates an intoxicating effect.

Though they may appear similar molecularly, CBD and THC have very different effects on the human body, which are important to recognize if you are considering incorporating CBD into your health and wellness regimen. Read on to learn more about CBD properties, as well as discover the answers to some of the most-asked questions about this compound.

CBD Properties: CBD and Your Health

In the body, CBD predominantly interacts with the endocannabinoid system (ECS). This system plays a regulatory role within the body and uses endocannabinoids to relay messages and affect bodily processes.

CBD has been studied for its unique capacity to modulate the ECS indirectly and without psychoactive effects. Because the CBD molecule has lower affinity at CB1 and CB2 receptors, it acts by a different mechanism.

CBD decreases the activity of fatty acid amide hydrolase, (FAAH) which is responsible for breaking down anandamide, a naturally-occurring cannabinoid that activates CB1 and CB2 receptors. This allows for more sustained activation of CB1 and CB2 receptors. This mechanism most likely accounts for the anti-inflammatory effects of CBD, as well as its ability to module the stress response.1

In addition to modulating the ECS’s capacity to affect the stress response, CBD has been linked to several secondary benefits that can address stressful conditions. This includes reducing pain, relieving inflammation, and improving sleep quality.

Given the psychological and physiological benefits that CBD has been shown to provide through its interactions with the ECS, the idea of using CBD to boost your health is appealing.

Before doing so, however, it is important to do your research and consult with your physician, especially if you are taking medication or have a pre-existing condition. Below are answers to five frequently asked questions about CBD properties to kick off the CBD research process.

Frequently Asked Questions About CBD Properties

What Is the Difference Between Hemp and Marijuana?

Though both hemp and marijuana are members of the same plant species, Cannabis sativa L., they have very different concentrations of cannabinoids, such as CBD and THC. Additionally, the two plants must be grown using different methods and in different environments, yielding very different results.

The term “hemp” refers to the variety of the cannabis plant most often used for food and fiber. On the other hand, “marijuana” refers to the variety grown specifically to enhance intoxicating compounds like THC.

Because of these differences, it is important to research the source materials and cannabinoids in your CBD product of choice as they will affect the CBD properties.2,3

Does CBD Get You High?

Unlike THC, CBD does not cause a psychoactive high. The functions of these two cannabinoids are very different. THC binds directly to endocannabinoid receptors and can greatly affect perception and mental function.

CBD does not have a high affinity for the endocannabinoid receptors. Instead, it affects the ECS through an alternative mechanism. This allows for sustained receptor activation without direct CBD binding. Through this mechanism, CBD produces balancing and soothing effects rather than intoxicating ones.4

Is CBD Addictive?

The World Health Organization (WHO) categorizes CBD as a safe substance.5 Additionally, a 2017 study demonstrated that CBD is not addictive, not demonstrating abuse liability at all of the dosages tested.6

However, because the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) recognizes CBD as a supplement, rather than a medication, there is no formal quality control for CBD products. This may mean that if you are not sourcing CBD from a reputable provider, it may contain THC.6 For this reason, it is critical to purchase CBD from a reputable provider and ensure it does not contain traces of THC.

Is CBD Legal?

The legalities of CBD products are an important point for those looking to use CBD. Typically, THC content determines whether a given CBD product is legal. All 100% legal CBD products are sourced from industrial hemp which contains high-CBD and low-THC levels—less than 0.3% THC.7

It is also important to note that CBD legality varies by country, as well as between states. More information about whether CBD is legal in all 50 states can be found here.
