How Aromatherapy Can Change the Ambiance of Your Home.

You’ve probably noticed that you feel hungry when you go to some stores, and that’s because they spray a scent that is a lot like that of freshly baked bread to make you crave the foods from their bakeries.

When you go to some hotels, you’ll feel relaxed because the hotel has the aroma of lemongrass or lavender, both of which are known to be relaxing. When you go to the spa, you’ll get a similar aroma, and some chain stores have distinctive scents too, encouraging customers to spend longer in their stores.

But what about your home? Is there a scent that makes you think that you’ve made it home?

More than Just a Scented Candle or Two

If you want to make your home feel like a truly relaxing and special environment then you’re going to want to do more than just lay out a scented candle in the living room. Essential oil diffusers can help make the home feel more relaxing and set the tone of the home.

The home fragrance market is a big business. In 2016, individuals spent $6.4 billion on deodorizers, air fresheners, and other similar products. Seventy-three percent of individuals use them, but why throw away money on expensive, chemical-based air fresheners when essential oils can often do a better job?

Synthetic products often have an overpowering scent and aren’t ideal for individuals who suffer from allergies. It makes more sense to use essential oils that will permeate each room in the house and create a more subtle background scent that could actually have beneficial effects in the long term. Additionally, many essential oils have antimicrobial properties, helping prevent the chances of illness or respiratory infection.1

Relaxing Home Experience

Aromatherapy can turn the home into a relaxing, spa-like oasis. The sense of smell is a sense is directly connected to the limbic system, which is where emotions and memories are stored. Additionally, it affects heart rate, stress levels, blood pressure, mood, and more.

Attaching familiar scents to specific rooms can ground us, and help us to get into the right “zone” at the right time.

For example, eucalyptus essential oil has anti-inflammatory and antiseptic properties, which can be useful in the bedroom or bathroom to create a healing, relaxing environment. Chamomile and lavender are also good choices for the bedroom and bathroom because they are relaxing.2

Ylang Ylang

Ylang-ylang essential oil is a more invigorating scent that can be used in the living room, while cinnamon essential oil is an obvious choice for the kitchen, with its energizing aroma.

Peppermint is a great pick me up. Its benefits are versatile, and it can be used in the bathroom, kitchen, and communal areas. The energizing and warming properties of the oil make it a perfect choice for improving mood and boosting energy.

A Little Goes a Long Way

You don’t have to spend a fortune to take advantage of the benefits of aromatherapy. A couple of drops of your preferred essential oil mixed with a carrier oil and placed in a diffuser goes a long way.

Additionally, most electric room diffusers release scents in certain time intervals, allowing long-lasting benefits from your essential oil of choice.

Use different scents in different rooms to achieve the best possible results, and remember to add more essential oil to the diffuser as needed.

You can even change up the scents, adding a few drops of something spicy or warming for a special occasion or adding something woody or fresh when you’re looking for an energy boost.
