Food allergies can affect anyone. Millions of people suffer from all kinds of food allergies. This test ultimately takes around two to three days to get the results back. 2. Skin Prick Test
This specific test, you have the benefit of getting immediate results. Therefore, if you are looking for the fastest results, this might be the way to go. A skin prick test is used to measure the presence of IgE antibodies for various suspected foods.2 Because these tests can be administered relatively quickly and because they provide immediate results, they are not only affordable but convenient, as well. When this test is administered, the solution is placed on the patient’s forearm and the medical professional uses a small and harmless needle to prick the skin in order to allow the solution to penetrate below the surface. Because it is such a small prick, it doesn’t hurt nor does it cause bruising. Ultimately, it helps puncture the skin enough to allow for the solution to breach the skin which can help identify whether or not the body treats the solution as a threat by producing antibodies. That being said, there are plenty of false positives and as much as 60 percent of all of these tests can yield false positive results which mean that you cannot solely count on them for definitive results. Instead, you will need to combine the information you get from the tests along with your medical history and complaints that you might have about symptoms to see whether or not you are truly allergic to something.
3. Elimination Diet
This is a good option for those that want to narrow down potential foods that they might be allergic to. If you are looking to properly diagnose a food allergy, your doctor is likely going to ask you to go on a tailored elimination diet. By combining an elimination diet alongside a conventional method of testing, you should be able to better narrow down the potential foods that could be causing the allergic reaction symptoms. For this type of diet to work, you will need to do it for a sufficient length of time. Typically, you want to go on an elimination diet anywhere from 2 to 3 weeks in order to ensure that you are able to eliminate other variables that could be causing the symptoms. If you eliminate the foods that you suspect are causing the symptoms and the symptoms go away, you have likely identified the food that you are allergic to. The key is seeing whether or not the symptoms return once you get off of your elimination diet.
