Cityscape: Atlanta, Georgia — The Big Peach

I've personally never had the pleasure of visiting the Big Apple, but I have spent a great deal of my life in the Big Peach—Atlanta—and think it’s one of the greatest cities in the world. It has a population of more than 472,000, with more than five million additional residents spread out throughout the Atlanta metropolitan area.

Additionally, Atlanta has more than 180 years worth of history since it was founded in the 1830s as a transportation hub. Later, during the Civil War, the city was nearly burnt entirely to the ground but survived to earn a new reputation as the capital of the New South. Atlanta was also an important part of the civil rights movement during the 1960s.

With so much going on in this massive city, it's easy to forget that it's actually part of Georgia—there's nothing else in the state quite like it. Most other towns in Georgia are relatively small, and a lot of the land is used for agriculture. Though in recent years key cities have seen significant growth, Atlanta remains far ahead of the pack.

Atlanta has always been known as a “city of firsts” in Georgia, as well as in the rest of the country. The Georgia Aquarium is an example of one of these firsts, at one point being the largest aquarium in the world and the first to host a number of unique aquatic animals.

The construction of the Georgia Aquarium was completed in 2002 and presented another reason for people to travel across the globe to visit the Big Peach. At the time, it was the largest aquarium in the world, an honor it didn’t lose until 2015 when construction of the Singapore Marine Life Park was completed. However, the Georgia Aquarium remains the largest U.S. aquarium.

The aquarium holds more than 10 million gallons of water at any given time, and the largest tank in the building holds 6.3 million gallons. Spread throughout that water are hundreds of marine species. One of these animals is the whale shark—the only other aquariums in the world to house whale sharks are located in Asia.

Atlanta and Peach Essential Oil atlanta, georgia

While Atlanta may feel different from the rest of Georgia, it’s still its capital and has strong cultural ties to the rest of the state. Because Georgia is the “Peach State,” Atlanta is known as the “Big Peach.” The peach has often been used to represent the state, the capital, and even the people who live there, which is why I connect the scent of peach and its essential oil so strongly to Atlanta.

Peach essential oil is created using the kernel of the peach. The kernels are cold-pressed, and the concentrated oil is collected. This oil has actually been used for hundreds of years in a number of different remedies, creams, and ointments. In modern times, it is a valuable part of aromatherapy treatments and a key ingredient in a number of beauty products.

Peach essential oil has some interesting benefits when compared to other essential oils. For example, the oil is not greasy, making it ideal for topical application in skin care. The oil is also able to easily penetrate the skin to provide its rejuvenating properties. Most of these properties come from high concentrations of vitamins and polyunsaturated fatty acids.

Peach essential oil also has antioxidant properties, which help it destroy free radicals that could harm the body. It can also be a powerful tool for improving skin conditions like eczema when combined with other essential oils.

But the best part about this essential oil is the smell. Even if it had no health benefits, I would still use peach essential oil in my aromatherapy sessions because as soon as I smell the oil, my mind travels back to Georgia, and to the great city of Atlanta.
