Linalyl acetate is an ester of linalool and an important terpene at work in many herbs and their essential oils. Linalool is one of the prime ingredients in bergamot and lavender essential oils and can be found in great quantities within other plants as well, especially those that feature linalool as they are closely related and complementary.

Linalyl acetate is best known for its highly-pleasant fruity fragrance with minty overtones that make it a primary constituent of many perfumes and fragrances in the personal health and hygiene industry.

Essential oils that contain linalyl acetate like bergamot, lavender and clary sage essential oils are best known for their stress relieving, antidepressant and cognitive boosts.

Uses of Linalyl Acetate in Aromatherapy

Linalyl Acetate and Linalool to Address Inflammatory Conditions

The powerful properties of linalool supported by linalyl acetate have been carefully studied for their effects on reducing inflammation. Even though inflammation is an important part of the body’s immune system, its effects of fighting infections and healing the area can cause damage and serious discomfort if allowed to continue unchecked.

According to experts, essential oils can be used to address the levels of inflammation in the body. Because essential oils are versatile and can help a specific condition from a wide variety of approaches, they make an ideal solution to conditions from bronchitis to ankylosing spondylitis.

In a study targeted at measuring the anti-inflammatory properties of linalool, linalyl acetate was also examined for its own anti-inflammatory action. The test subjects were a set of lab rats induced with inflammatory edema, and the studies showed that the linalool and linalyl acetate combination did indeed reduce the edema proving their role in inflammatory activity in many essential oils in which they are found. 1


Lavender (Lavandula angustifolia) Aromatherapy for Anxiety Relief

Perhaps one of the most important essential oils and one no collection should be without are lavender essential oils as they have applications such as a digestive aid, sleep enhancer and stress reliever. Extensive studies have been made on the ways lavender essential oils work to balance the nervous system in times of stress or anxiety.

One test involved inducing anxiety in test subjects through the viewing of an, especially impactful film clip. Test subjects were observed as the graphic visual display elevated the heart rates and stress levels of their subjects. When the test was repeated on a group provided with lavender essential oils in an ingestible form, the stress levels were greatly reduced. This established lavender essential oil, and its various constituents, as an effective anxiolytic. 2


Bergamot (Citrus bergamia) for Stress Relief and Reduced Blood Pressure

Bergamot has especially high-levels of linalyl acetate that contribute to its amazing benefits as a stress reliever and anti-depressant. Most people recognize bergamot from that distinctive flavor that makes Earl Grey tea the charming daybreaker it is. But, did you know that bergamot can help to relax at the end of the day and get a good night’s sleep?

Bergamot essential oils were considered for their effects on treating depression and anxiety and tested on lab rats. The study showed these lab rats exhibited a greatly reduced corticosterone activity under the influence of bergamot essential oils. Corticosterone is a hormone produced in many animals that allows them to optimize energy efficiency in flight or fight responses.

The study showed those mice treated with an essential oil blend of bergamot and lavender exhibited reduced blood pressure and milder heart rate compared to those provided with a placebo. 3

As you will see in the following section, these effects have been found in other experiments with linalyl acetate.

Linalyl Acetate and Antioxidative Benefits to Reduce Hypertension and Protection from Ischemic Injury

The high-quality antioxidant properties of Linalyl acetate have also been found effective in addressing conditions of hypertension and the ischemic injuries that can result. Ischemic injuries come about when certain regions of the body are not getting sufficient supplies of oxygen, which can happen for a large number of reasons.

Ischemic stroke, however, is commonly caused by conditions of hypertension and high blood pressures. As a hypotensive, Linalyl acetate was found to have a beneficial effect on preventing ischemic injuries and stroke through modulating intracellular Ca2+ concentrations. The study went on to show that Linalyl acetate has the capacity to induce vasorelaxation, which soothes and the tension of blood vessels, again an important preventative to these issues with circulation. 4

Hypertension can be caused by a great number of factors. But, it is good to know that an effective solution exists in an essential oil like bergamot.

Active Cardiovascular protection from the Effects of Nicotine

The adverse effects of nicotine exposure have been well-documented and most people have abandoned this unhealthy habit, but it persists. Those smoking, as well as those who are regularly exposed to the effects of nicotine, are at risk from a great many cardiovascular conditions. This has been especially true for the younger than adolescent age brackets. It is still largely unknown why adolescents are more prone to these conditions than others.

A study was therefore performed to register the effect of nicotine on the heart rate and lung function, nitric oxide levels and vascular contractility. The linalyl acetate group also exhibited a more enduring calm and relaxation as a result. The study concluded that linalyl acetate treatment resulted in the recovery of cell damage and greatly improved the cardiovascular response for those exposed to nicotine.

Those living, working and operating in close proximity to smokers have long been exposed to the dangers to their health. According to the findings in this study, linalyl acetate, as found in a great variety of essential oils, can help to reduce the debilitating effects on the heart and lungs. 5
