Plants for a Fragrant Yard
If you walk through a properly-planted garden, all of your senses should be awakened: see the colorful flowers, feel the luscious shrubbery, hear the buzzing or chirping of crickets in the garden, and smell the aroma of a range of different flowers. Creating a fragrant yard is an easy task, especially if you know the right plants for the job. Here are some of the choices to consider when selecting plants for a beautiful and fragrant yard.
Dianthus
Dianthus plants come in over 300 varieties such as carnations, pinks, and Sweet William. Many of the varieties have flowers with a fragrant and spicy scent, quite similar to those produced by cinnamon and clove. Most of the varieties of the plant have red, pink or white flowers where the petals are notched. They should be planted in areas with properly drained soil and in full sun.
Nicotiana
The plant comes in 67 species—either pink, white, red, or pastel in color. Whichever one you choose, you can count on the fact that your garden will be full of a sweet, strong fragrance. The flowers are trumpet-shaped and the scent is strongest in the evening or at night. Consider growing these plants on your patio or anywhere you can readily enjoy their scent during the evening hours. They are mostly grown in partial shade or full sun, with soil that is moist but with proper drainage.
Calendula
Calendula produces both beautiful and edible flowers. Besides being easy to maintain, it is quite popular in gardens because it offers therapeutic benefits. The plants bloom through the entire growing season with fragrant leaves. The flowers produce a resin-like aroma that’s very sweet, unlike many other fragrant flowers in different gardens. Although the plant prefers growing in full sun, it can prosper in light shade in warmer areas.
Jasmine
If you want to create a relaxing and calming backyard, you should definitely consider adding the jasmine plant. It has a sweet smell that has been shown to naturally calm the nerves and is one of the popularly-used ingredients for creating perfumes. The plant comes in over 300 species, with most of them growing in warmer climates. However, there are a few that prefer colder climates. Jasmine has a sweet and musky scent that is especially strong in the evening.
Scented Geraniums
This is a variety of the geranium that doesn’t bloom as often or as impressively. However, it has an amazing scent that would definitely be a great addition to your aromatic garden. Plant these flowers near the hedges, borders, or any seating area in the garden. To release the rich fragrance, the leaves should be brushed or touched frequently. Scented geraniums can release different fragrances such as cinnamon, apricot, lemon, ginger, apple, nutmeg, lemon, strawberry, peppermint or orange. They prosper in climates with a lot of sun, and in different types of soil, but avoid moist areas. Before fall begins, dig up the plants and take them indoors. Also, consider taking cuttings from these plants to grow during the winter.
Unlike other shrubs, junipers don’t need to be pruned to maintain their shape. Therefore, if you want to create a boundary hedge with little to no maintenance, this should be your first choice. You can use the shrub to attract wildlife to your garden and create a pungent, spicy, and fresh fragrance. These are the best shrubs for wildlife in your garden because they produce food, nesting sites for birds, and shelter for other animals.
Lemon Balm
You can use this plant to create a fresh and pleasant scent in your garden. It is part of the mint family of plants and has small white flowers and leaves similar to other plants in its family. Lemon balm is a very low-maintenance plant that grows in either full sun or partial shade in essentially any type of soil, but preferably well-drained soil. The herb can be quite invasive, which can be avoided by removing the flowers once they start spreading. Avoid fertilizing the plant to allow it to maintain its scent.
