Our Top 4 Books for This Halloween Season

The month of October is a great time to dive into a new book or two. Whether you are an avid reader or someone who prefers to read from time to time, there are several great books to pick up and read during the Halloween season. From pure horror to magical romance, the selection of books appropriate for the season is endless. Below, we have listed some of our favorite reads for this spooky time of year.

Halloween season It - Stephen King

As we begin, it is only fitting that the king of horror should top our list. Published in 1986, Stephen King’s It terrified readers from the moment it hit shelves. Measuring close to 1,200 pages, It tells the story of seven children who are visited by an other-worldly entity that takes on the form of their deepest fear. The entity, when not terrorizing and murdering the children of Derry, Maine, takes on the appearance of a man dressed in a silver clown suit known as Pennywise, the Dancing Clown. As the children begin to unravel the truth about the clown, they begin to also discover truths about themselves and the not so sleepy town they call home. 2017 saw a resurgence of popularity and interest in the novel with the release of Andy Muschietti’s film of the first part of the novel. The second chapter is set to be released in late 2019.

And Then There Were None - Agatha Christie

It is hard to talk about books, especially those in the genre of suspense, without bringing up the queen of mystery, Agatha Christie. With over seventy titles to her credit, Agatha Christie revolutionized the mystery novel. In perhaps her most famous work of fiction, And Then There Were None , Christie tells the tale of ten mysterious people who were all brought together on a remote island by an unknown host. Upon arriving on the island, the guests soon begin to realize that something more sinister than they ever imagined is at play. The guests begin being confronted with their past as an unknown person in the house begins murdering the guests, taking them out one by one. As a storm moves in, the guests become stranded and they quickly realize that there may be no escaping their fate.

The Girl on the Train - Paula Hawkins halloween season

In one of the most suspenseful novels of the 21st century, the reader is plunged into the lives of three women, Rachel, Megan, and Anna, each of whom narrates portions of the book. Each of these women shares complicated relationships with each other, with special attention given to the relationship between Rachel and Anna. Anna lives happily in her own world with her child and husband, a man to whom Rachel was once married. When Megan goes missing and Rachel finds herself covered in blood, lying in the street near where Megan was last seen, her already chaotic life threatens to become unbearable. As the police begin asking questions about a night she can’t remember, Rachel takes it upon herself to clear her name and discover the truth of what happened to Megan Hipwell.

The Woman in Cabin 10 - Ruth Ware

In this horror and thriller novel, Ruth Ware puts readers in the mind of a travel journalist, Lo Blacklock, who is looking to rise in the ranks in her career, and prove to her boss she’s ready, by writing a profile on the launch of a luxurious cruise ship. However, as her past demons start to hinder her abilities, she is met with a mystery that seems to be unfolding on the ship surrounding an unknown woman and the lengths Lo must go to protect her, even if it means putting herself in danger. The Woman in Cabin 10 is a must-read for those that love the spooky and scary. As the reader begins to dig with Lo into the story of tragedy on the ship, a true sense of camaraderie and empowerment may begin to arise, especially within female readers. This novel hits on the importance of looking out for one another, no matter what may befall those in need. So cozy up and get ready for suspense and excitement on each page, and be on the lookout for a movie in the works to bring this suspenseful story to theaters. However, don’t wait until then - we all know the juicy details from the book don’t always make it screen.

There are hundreds of books that are perfect for enjoying this Halloween season. The titles mentioned above are just four of the favorites that we believe are great for this time of year.
