DIY Makeup

Take a moment to think about your makeup routine. Are you someone who never leaves the house without a face full of makeup, or do you simply swipe on some lip gloss and mascara and head out the door? Regardless of your preferences, your makeup may include more toxins than you are aware of.

Look at the ingredient list of your favorite lip gloss, foundation, mascara, etc. Do you recognize any of those ingredients? Here’s one scary fact: there are only 10 banned ingredients in the US, but over 1,400 in the EU. Hundreds of chemicals are allowed to be added to an ingredient list under the moniker of ‘fragrance’ or ‘perfume’. 1

The beauty industry has slowly but surely begun to clean up its act. More people are concerned about what they are putting on their bodies, and many companies now offer full-transparency ingredient lists and use natural and organic ingredients. Yet even the word ‘natural’ isn’t regulated, and you should still do your homework before deciding to purchase.

Many of these natural alternatives are also a lot pricier than their toxic counterparts. If you’re feeling a bit overwhelmed by the beauty industry and are looking for easy, no-fuss DIY alternatives, you’ve come to the right place. It’s easy to make your own mascara, lip balm, lip gloss, eyeshadow, eyeliner, and more from the comfort of your own home.

powder eye shadow

Eye shadow and blush

Homemade eye shadows and blush are some of the easiest products to make at home. Everything you need is likely already in your pantry! All of these ingredients will mix together to create loose powders. To apply them to the skin, use a damp eyeshadow brush or lightly spray a powder brush with water. If you’d like a more solid version, mix a small amount of shea butter and beeswax into the powder until you reach desired consistency.

    • Brown/tan: Cocoa powder, arrowroot powder, cornstarch, cinnamon, ginger , nutmeg

    • Black/grey : Activated charcoal powder

    • Green : Green clay, spirulina

    • Red : Beetroot powder, hibiscus powder, pink clay

    • Purple: Alkanet root powder, rose clay

    • Additions : Mica powder for sparkle, or a mix of clays such as kaolin white, Moroccan red, rose clay, rhassoul clay, and bentonite clay. 2

Have you ever used cheap mascara and ended up with itchy, irritated eyes? The ingredient lists for mascara can be very alarming, yet it is very easy to make at home. This requires a little more effort than powdered eyeshadow or blush, but with only four ingredients, your eyes will thank you.

    • 4 tsp aloe vera gel

    • 2 tsp coconut oil

    • 1-2 capsules activated charcoal (for brown mascara, use cocoa powder instead)

    • 1/2 - 1 tsp beeswax pellets

Since coconut oil becomes liquid at higher temperatures, you may want to slightly increase the amount of beeswax in the recipe if you live in a tropical climate.

Heat the coconut oil, aloe vera, and beeswax in a double boiler over low heat, until beeswax is melted. Mix in the activated charcoal or cocoa powder. Remove from heat. Transfer mix into an empty mascara tube, and voila! 3

color lipsticks

Lip balm and lipstick

Lip balm is one of the most fun products to make because the possibilities are endless. You can make a very simple, unscented, moisturizing balm, or you can go all out with scents and color to make your own cream lipsticks. All you need are a few ingredients and some empty tins to create a range of different products.

Lip balm

    • 2 tsp coconut oil or sweet almond oil

    • 1 tsp beeswax

    • 1 tsp cocoa butter or shea butter

These three ingredients are the base of so many different lip balms. To make a very simple balm, all you need to do is heat the oil, wax, and butter in a double boiler over low heat. When they are all mixed together, remove from heat, transfer to a container, and let cool.

Here’s where it gets fun. This recipe will make more of a tinted balm than a lipstick, but the result will be very moisturizing with a natural pop of color. Use the lip balm recipe as a base, and then add any of the following to make it your own:

    • A few drops of your favorite essential oil

    • Beetroot powder

    • Cocoa powder

    • Cinnamon

    • Alkanet root powder

    • Mica powder for shimmer

    • Bentonite clay for matte 4

Once you master these recipes, you can move on to homemade foundations, eyeliners, and more! Feel better knowing that you are doing your part to remove harmful toxins from your daily makeup routine.
