When you need a break from the hustle and bustle of everyday life, there’s no better place to go than the mountains. Whether you’re looking to take a short weekend trip away or jet off to the other side of the world, there are incredible mountains in every region waiting to be explored.
Perhaps the most iconic mountain in North America is El Capitan, part of Yosemite National Park in California. Both El Capitan and its neighbor Half Dome are impressive backdrops of one of the most beautiful national parks in the US. It is one of the most photographed destinations in the world, with Ansel Adams solidifying its timelessness with his popular photograph of the mountain.
The hike up El Capitan is approximately 15 miles round-trip and is recommended for experienced hikers only. If you aren’t feeling up to the challenge, there are plenty of shorter, stunning hikes in Yosemite Valley. 1
When you think of hiking in South America, perhaps one of the first places that come to mind is Patagonia. Encompassing large portions of Chile and northern Argentina, Patagonia is a haven for outdoor enthusiasts. Pristine lakes, glaciers, and looming mountains make it one of the most stunning landscapes in the world.
No matter where you go in Patagonia, you’ll be surrounded by amazing scenery. If you’re feeling up for a trek, Torres del Paine National Park in Chile offers a wide range of hikes for all fitness levels. You can hike the five miles to the iconic Towers, or spend four to five days hiking the W. 2
The Dolomites are a mountain range located in northeastern Italy. Whether you’re interested in skiing in the winter or hiking, mountain climbing, paragliding, or cycling in the summer, there is something for everyone. Marmolada is the highest mountain in the Dolomites and offers a range of hiking trails for different skill levels. Dolomiti Bellunesi National Park is located within the Dolomite region, as well as a handful of other regional parks. Each offers impeccable scenery and a variety of activities for the whole family. 3
Most people are familiar with Mount Everest, located on the boundary between Nepal and Tibet, but many won’t make the treacherous trek to the top. Mount Everest is the highest mountain in the world and is a part of the Himalayan mountain range.
Although summiting Mount Everest is only for the most experienced mountaineers, the hike to Everest Base Camp is a very popular multi-day hike. The hike is 130km (80 miles) round-trip and takes approximately 12 days to complete. If you aren’t feeling up to such a long trek, there are plenty of shorter day hikes around the Himalayas. 4
Mount Kilimanjaro is a dormant volcano located in Tanzania and is the highest mountain in all of Africa. It is a very popular spot for mountain climbers and is located within Kilimanjaro National Park. Surprisingly, scaling Kilimanjaro requires no technical skill and climbers with a moderate fitness level can attempt the climb. There are six different ascent routes, and choosing one of the longer routes will give you more peace and quiet.
If you aren’t feeling up to scaling Kilimanjaro, simply walking through the national park will offer you incredible views of the surrounding scenery, and there are plenty of shorter hikes that won’t require you to bring a week’s worth of gear. 5
The Blue Mountains are located approximately two hours west of Sydney, Australia. They are a lush, green oasis in a country that is known for its red deserts. The Blue Mountains offer unbelievable views of canyons, cliffs, streams, waterfalls, and tall forests that can instantly instill a sense of peace.
There are 140km (87 miles) of walking tracks throughout the Blue Mountains with varying levels of difficulty, so there is something for everyone. Blue Mountains National Park offers a wide range of hiking, camping, and mountain biking trails for those who are feeling adventurous. 6

If you can’t get halfway around the world to take a mountain vacation, there is no need to worry. You don’t need to take a trip to the most popular mountains in the world to benefit from nature. If you live near a national park, try going out for a day hike.
