Hangover Cures with Essential Oils

A night of drinking with your friends can be a lot of fun. Unfortunately, the hangover the next morning is not.

There are a few things that contribute to a hangover. Primarily, it is the body attempting to process the alcohol—a toxin it feels like it needs to remove. Additionally, they are often caused by the dehydration that comes from a combination of the diuretic effect of alcohol and the liver working hard to flush the alcohol out of the body.

Hangover symptoms can include dehydration, nausea, general sluggishness, and headaches. Thankfully, there are some fantastic natural ways to treat your hangover.

Essential Oils for Headache Relief

One of the most common symptoms of a hangover is a splitting headache. After a night of drinking, many people struggle to get off the couch or out of bed. Thankfully, you don't need to grab a bottle of painkillers to relieve your headache. The right essential oils provide relief.

Peppermint essential oil has been used to treat all kinds of headaches —including hangover headaches—for decades. A 1996 study found that peppermint oil can relieve headache symptoms in as little as 10 minutes. 1 It's fast, effective, and smells fantastic.

Eucalyptus oil is also a terrific option for relieving hangovers. It's a natural expectorant, which means it can help the body remove toxins like alcohol. Studies have found that eucalyptus oil works especially well when it's combined with peppermint oil. 2

Essential Oils for Nausea

Too much alcohol can make you sick to your stomach. Ginger essential oil is one of the top ways of relieving nausea. Research has shown that it can reduce both nausea and vomiting. 3 Whether you apply a few drops of oil to your pressure points or use it aromatically, using some ginger oil can make a big difference.

Another fantastic option is cardamom oil. Cardamom is in the same family as ginger, which means it can provide similar benefits. Studies have shown that it's great for relieving nausea , especially when blended with other essential oils. 4

Hydration Hangover Cures Essential Oils for Dehydration

When you drink a lot of alcohol, it's harder for the body to absorb water. This can leave you dehydrated, which can worsen hangover symptoms. While drinking water is the best way to recover from dehydration, the right essential oils can speed up the process.

Lemon oil, lavender oil, and grapefruit oil can all support hydration. If you're able to rehydrate quickly, a lot of your hangover symptoms will fade away. With water and aromatherapy, you'll feel better before you know it.

Essential Oils for Energy

When you have a nasty hangover, it can be tempting to sleep all day. Sadly, for most people, that isn't an option. The right essential oils can provide a quick energy burst.

Citrus oils can be an excellent source of energy, especially orange oil. It has the same smell as a fresh orange, and it can wake you up in a matter of minutes. Lime and grapefruit oil aren't quite as potent, but they can still wake you up in a pinch.

If you're not a fan of citrus, consider rosemary essential oil. A study published in the Journal of The Neurological Sciences has shown that rosemary essential oil can increase cerebral blood flow, leaving you more alert. 5 Other herbal oils, like thyme, basil, and lemongrass, can deliver the same fantastic results.

All of these essential oils can be used topically when diluted with a carrier oil or in aromatherapy with a few drops added to a room diffuser for long-lasting effects throughout the day.
