Exploring the Topical Benefits of CBD

Cannabidiol, or CBD, is a compound derived from the hemp plant, a member of the cannabis family. Unlike tetrahydrocannabinol (THC), the well-known psychoactive compound in marijuana that produces an intoxicating psychoactive effect, CBD provides therapeutic benefits without a high. These properties are the reason that CBD has become so popular.

CBD can be used aromatically, internally, or topically to provide a wide range of health benefits. Additionally, when combined with terpenes, these compounds interact synergistically to create an “entourage” effect, potentiating the benefits of both CBD and essential oils.

This is why MONQ offers your favorite blends infused with American-grown CBD in essential oil diffusers, Roll-On Blends, and now, MONQ Bath Soaks. These provide you with the benefits of essential oils, CBD—as well as the benefits from combining the two. Additionally, experiencing CBD as a Roll-On or Bath Soak creates a new experience because it allows you to reap the topical benefits of CBD. Read on to learn more about what these topical benefits are.

 width= Endocannabinoid System

The endocannabinoid system (ECS) has essential functions in regulating many organ systems which ultimately contributes to maintaining homeostasis, or stability in the internal environment of the body. The ECS is composed of three primary components: endocannabinoids, receptors, and enzymes. 1

Endocannabinoids are molecules made by the body that bind to receptors in the ECS to help it execute its primary functions. The two key endocannabinoids that have been identified thus far are anandamide (AEA) and 2-arachidonoylglycerol (2-AG).

There are two primary types of receptors in the ECS to which these endocannabinoids can bind: CB1 and CB2.

CB1 receptors are primarily located in the central nervous system. These receptors can produce long and short-term changes in neurotransmissions and also affect mood and sleep duration. 2

CB2 receptors are found throughout the peripheral nervous system, especially in immune cells and the gastrointestinal tract. When the body experiences inflammation, CB2 receptors work to restore homeostasis.

 width= CBD and the Skin

CB2 receptors are also found in the skin. In fact, because the skin is the body’s largest organ and the first line of defense against foreign substances that may harm the body, it has the highest concentration of cannabinoid receptors. Typically, these cannabinoid receptors interact with the body’s naturally occurring cannabinoids, but compounds with similar molecular structures can also interact with them to produce similar effects.

Though the mechanisms for how CBD achieves therapeutic effects are still being explored, there is a range of potential mechanisms that have been supported by several studies.

First, it is important to note that, unlike THC, CBD is not an agonist for CB1/CB2 receptors and has a low binding affinity for these receptors. 3

Instead, CBD has been shown to inhibit FAAH, which typically breaks down the endocannabinoid anandamide. This allows for increased anandamide levels and, therefore, more prolonged activation of CB1/CB2 receptors.

In other words, CBD works to modulate other activities that affect the function of CB1 and CB2 receptors. This activation of CB1 and CB2 receptors allows for wide-ranging benefits for the body like better mood and reduced discomfort . 4

Topical Benefits of CBD

Skin Health

The skin, in particular, is able to respond well to CBD to regulate inflammation and aches. 5 And, recent studies have shown that CBD topicals can penetrate the skin deeply enough to truly make a difference in these processes. 6

One of the reasons that CBD may be useful for skin health is because studies have shown it may be an antioxidant. To determine this, researchers compared CBD’s ability to protect against glutamate neurotoxicity and hydroperoxide-induced oxidative damage to other known antioxidants. The study found that CBD protected against free radical damage as well as, or better than other known antioxidants. 7

If CBD can act as an antioxidant, researchers believe it could benefit the skin by preventing damage from oxidative stress, which contributes to aging.

Additionally, CBD has exhibited anti-inflammatory activity in models of skin inflammation, meaning it has the potential to relieve a wide range of skin conditions that occur as a result of inflammation or present with redness. 8

 width= Localized Relief of Discomfort

Topical CBD use not only provides benefits for the skin itself but also offers localized discomfort relief to the areas where it is applied.

With topical CBD products, the effects in a particular area are more concentrated because it is not absorbed into the bloodstream and spread throughout the entire body, which is typically the case with other CBD experiences. This makes topical products great for soothing aches and local discomfort. 9

In fact, preclinical studies have demonstrated that molecules that cause activation of cannabinoid receptors, (especially CB1 and CB2) can block the pain and inflammation seen in acute and chronic models of pain. This same study shows that topical application may be the best route of administration for localized inflammation symptoms. 10

Additionally, a study published in the European Journal of Pain found that a topical CBD gel significantly reduced pain and inflammation in an arthritis model and had 10-fold higher skin permeability compared to other cannabinoids. 11
